Mirage runs headlong into Denfeld/Central and East hockey machines
Last week, the Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall girls hockey team skated at Duluth?s Pioneer Arena against the Denfeld-Central Devils.
The host Devils all but put the game on ice in the opening period, with six unanswered goals. The PHM skaters were cast into the role of a come-from-behind attempt.
Midway through the second period Whitney Olson, with the assist from Sara Parvey, scored against the Devils. That goal proved to be the only one of the period for PHM. The Mirage defense held the hard hitting and hard skating Denfeld-Central offense off the scoreboard.
In the third period, Alex Olson with help from Parvey and Whitney Olson, scored one more for PHM.
Both goals by the Mirage were neutralized when Denfeld-Central scored two more net rufflers in the third period to complete the 8-2 win over the Mirage. Erin Kolkin, a Proctor ninth grader was in the net for the Mirage and stopped 22 shots on goal.
Dul. East 7, PHM 1
The Mirage were defeated two days later, when they hosted the Duluth East Greyhounds.
The opening period proved to be far less devastating, yet in a way just as frustrating for Mirage players, coaches, and fans.
The PHM skaters punched in their one goal in the third period against the swarming Duluth East defense. That scoring opportunity came at the 6:02 mark when Parvey with the help of Whitney Olson scored.
Kolkin stopped 41 shots on goal by the Greyhounds? offense.
Kolkin?s play has her ranked in the top 10 in the region for save percentages and goals against averages.
The Mirage will be in Grand Rapids later this week for the Grand Rapids? Rendezvous tournament. PHM begins play today (Thurs.) at 5 p.m. against Superior. Their next outing will be Fri. at 3 p.m. at the ice arena east of Grand Rapids on Highway 38.
Play in the Grand Rapids tournament will wind-up on Sat. either at 10 a.m. or noon depending on Friday?s results.
