VB takes Superior to the limit in pre-subsection match
By: The Sports Guy
Proctor tuned up for the Section 7AA subsection yesterday (Wed.; results unavailable at deadline) with two matches last week, one against long-time state power Hibbing and the other against across-the-lake rival Superior. The subsection pitted Proctor against top seeded Esko in the Eskomos home gym. If the Rails win, they move on to play the winner of the Moose Lake-Willow River/Aitkin match at 6 p.m. on Fri. Oct. 26 in the Duluth Denfeld gymnasium.
Proctor traveled to Hibbing Mon. Oct 15 to play the Bluejackets, #1-seeded in Section 7AA with an 18-8 season record. The Rails fell to the defending section champions in three straight games with scores of 25-7, 25-10, and 25-21. Aubrey Knox and Ashley Bird had 5 and 4 digs, respectively for the Rails.
The Rails had a better time the next evening at home, taking the Spartans to the limit with five games. Proctor won the first and third games 25-19 and 25-13, with Superior pulling even twice with second and fourth game wins in 25-13 and 26-24. With the score in the final game tied at 13-13, the Spartans scored the matchpoint to finally take the thriller 15-13. With their last match in the PHS gymnasium, the Proctor seniors shined. Brooke Morin had a stunning 9 ace serves in the match, and teammates Mindy Clark and Ally Gellatly had 3 kills each.
