Proctor Duluth NARVRE unit celebrates 20th anniversary
The Proctor-Duluth Unit #92 of the National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Chartered in September, 1988, the Unit originated with 180 rail retirees and their spouses, 20 of whom are still on the roles. To date, the local Unit membership has increased to 450 area rail retirees, and is working toward a membership of 500 by the end of this year.
The National Organization was chartered in 1938 in Louisville, Kentucky. Local members, in coordination with units nationwide, have worked for the preservation of the Railroad Pension Fund. Using Congressional contacts, NARVRE prevented Congress from “borrowing” from the Fund several times, moving the Fund into Social Security and privatizing Tier II pension funds. It also sued the state of Minnesota to stop taxation of railroad pensions, and won. The organization continues to work on issues of concern to rail retirees and all retired citizens.
The next local unit meeting will be held Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. at the West Duluth American Legion. Area railroad retirees are invited to attend.
