Hylla visitation Fri, Funeral at Field Sat.
David L. Hylla, Proctor high school teacher and coach for 30 years died unexpectedly
Aug. 5, 2008 at his Proctor home. He was 58
He was born on Dec. 19, 1949 to Roy and Rosemary Hylla in Holdingford, Minn., and
was raised on the family farm. David was a 1967 graduate of Holdingford High School.
He received his BA Degree from St. Cloud State in 1971 and his MA Degree from UWS.
David joined the Proctor school district in 1977 and taught physical education,
economics, sociology and anthropology. He took over as head football coach in 1981
and had a 195-77 record, including 22-2 the past two years, the most successful
seasons in school history. He was planning on retiring at the end of the school year.
In addition to football, he also coached basketball and track. David's many honors and
awards from the Minnesota State High School Coaches Assn. included the George Haun
Award, Hall of Fame Award and the MSHSCA Power of Influence Award. He was also
named Coach of The Year several times and in 2006 was the Section 7 AAA Coach of
The Year. He was a member and past president of the MN State High School Football
Coaches Assn. He had attended Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerry and infant daughter, Jennifer.
David is survived by his daughter, Ashley Hylla (fiance, Mike Bergum), Proctor; fiance,
Gloria Karsky, North Branch, Minn.; brothers and sisters, Sharon (Russ) Hylla, Ronald
(Cheri) Hylla, Mark (JoAnn) Hylla, Scott (Jennifer) Hylla; sister in law, Andrea Hylla, all of
Holdingford, Minn., Kevin Hylla, St. Cloud and Michelle (Conrad) Eggan, Waconia,
Minn.; and many nieces, nephews friends students and players.
VISITATION:5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Proctor High School Gymnasium. Funeral services
will be Saturday 11 a.m. at the Proctor Football Field. In the event of inclement
weather, funeral services will be in the gymnasium.
Burial at St. Columbkille Cemetery, St. Wendel, Minn. Arrangements by Williams-
Lobermeier Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the David Hylla Memorial
Scholarship Fund, in care of the family, are preferred.
