Werner to return home for more schooling

Proctor Journal

This week’s First National Bank of Proctor Academic All-Star is Foreign Exchange Student Marleen Werner.

Marleen comes to PHS from Germany via the AYUSA exchange program. Her favorite class this year is Pre-Calculus with Mr. Savre. She says, “It is challenging to learn Math in English. I have been able to experience the differences in learning Math. In Germany, we are taught Math in a different style.”

Werner returns to Germany at the end of the school year, where she will continue her standard education for 2-1/2 more years. Upon completion, she will make her career choice, then continue her studies at the university.

At home, Marleen was involved in handball and dancing. While in Proctor, she has been part of Track. She enjoys swimming, biking, scuba diving, traveling, playing piano, squash, beach volleyball and spending time with friends.

When asked about her most memorable moment at PHS, she replies, “Once during school, a fellow classmate showed me how to close his locker (in an exciting and unique way). He shut it and I wanted to say, ‘good job,’ or ‘amazing,’ but instead I exclaimed, ‘Happy Birthday!’ Since then, every time something exciting happens, people tell me ‘Happy Birthday!’”

Jim Savre comments, “Marleen came from Germany and joined my Pre-Calculus class halfway through the course. Despite missing the first part of the year and having to learn Math in a new language, she has done outstanding work. Her positive attitude, hard work and contributions to class discussions help make the class great, as well as making my job fun!”

Todd and Liz Asanovich write, “As Marleen’s host parents, we are very proud of her academic and athletic achievements. Marleen is a very intelligent young lady. We know that she will continue to do great things in Germany. Great job on all of your accomplishments at Proctor this year! Lots of love, Todd and Liz.”
