Girls BB wins 2; nearly break century mark
By: The Sports Guy
It was 2 for 2 last week for the Proctor girls basketball team as the Rails came out on top in games at Two Harbors (55-52) on Tues., Jan. 17 and at home against Greenway (99-35) on Thurs., Jan. 19.
Rails vs. Agates
Two Harbors had taken a 9-point lead into the locker room at the half, but Proctor stormed back to outscore the Agates by 12 points in the second half for the win. The Rails rallied behind Dani Beck’s 22 points and Sam Oraskovich’s 15, which included an awesome four 3-point shots.
Rails vs. Raiders
A sports paradox: a team gets a big lead and doesn’t want to continue playing the starters to run up the score, so it substitutes the reserves into the game. Happy to be playing and trying to do well to insure future playing, the players then proceed to run up the score. Proctor didn’t really try to beat Greenway by the final 64-point gap – Coach Derek Parendo’s team would have probably been content to simply hold the more than double point lead they built in the first half. But hard-working people deserve – and need – to play. Yesterday’s reserve may be tomorrow’s starter.
So all in all, eleven Rails saw scoring action in the game. Beck led all scorers with 18 points, with fresh faces Emily White (10), Ashley Tousignant (6), Valissa Olson (6), and Brittany Bartlett (2) racking up points for the Rails.
Proctor hits the road for two games against Eveleth-Gilbert (Thurs., Jan. 26) and East Central (Mon., Jan. 30 at Finlayson) before returning home for a Tues., Jan. 31 game against Duluth Central. All games start at 7:30 p.m.
CORRECTION:
In last week’s coverage of the Barnum game, submitted statistics listed the Rails scoring 14 points in the last 1:41 of the game. Re-adding the scores shows a 16-point rally. Also, the individual scoring breakdown during that period is incorrect. Both should have been checked before printing. The Sports Guy chooses to paraphrase starship physician Dr. McCoy: “Darn it, Jim, I’m a writer, not an accountant!”
