Helen Joy Mattson, Helen Joy Mattson, formerly of Meadowlands, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at Edgewood Vista. She was 92.
The Hermantown resident was born March 26, 1916 in Carthage, South Dakota, to James and Vivian (Vincent) Thompson and moved to Meadowlands in 1918.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin Mattson; one son, Carl Larson; one sister, Dorothy Froehlich; and an infant brother.
She is survived by one son, Larry (Ardith) Larson of Friday Harbor, Wash.; one step-son, Charles (Alice) Mattson of New York.; one granddaughter, one grand son, three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons; one great-great-grandaughter; two nephews, Milton (Meredith) Froehlich and James (Berit) Froehlich; and two nieces, Marilyn Stauber, Saginaw, and Carolyn Salo (Arne Jamsa).
A private family service will be held at a later date. James Wheeler Barthol, James Wheeler Barthol, Pike Lake, passed away December 13 in San Diego, Calif. He was 69.
Jim was born in Duluth on June 13, 1939 to C.J. (Bart) and Esther Gustafson Barthol. He graduated from Hermantown High School and Dunwoody Institute. Jim operated Chester Park Motors in Duluth. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Jim will be sadly missed by sister, Katherine Juntanen, Duluth, son, Tim Brandon, Duluth, niece Kimberly (Mark) Eckhart and their four children of Fergus Falls, Minn.
A memorial service will be held on what would have been Jim’s 70th birthday, June 13, 2009, 11 a.m. in Sunrise Funeral Chapel. Inurnment at Sunrise Cemetery. Evelyn Rose Sway, Evelyn Rose Sway, formerly of Proctor, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. She was 85.
The Moose Lake resident was born Jan. 23, 1923 in Barnum Township to Charles and Margaret (Hennes) Kahring.
Evelyn was united in marriage to Clarence John Sway on Aug. 30, 1942 in Moose Lake. Evelyn was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake and St. Ann’s Guild. She enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, baking and traveling.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; son-in-law, Terry Harris; her grandson Mark’s fiancé, Baby Mari-Lyn Balmeceda; two brothers and two sisters.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Mike (Peggy) Sway of Barnum, Anita (Stan) Butkiewicz of St. Paul, Gary (Janet) Sway of Kerrick, Joan (Chris Aufderhar) Kociemba of Sturgeon Lake and Lynn Harris of Chula Vista, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jenny, Jill, Mark, Aaron, Christina, Aric and Nick; 11 great grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce (Paul) Weske of Minneapolis.
A service was held Saturday, Dec. 20, in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake with Father Eamonn Boland as the celebrant. Inurnment will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery, Barnum.
Harold James Dahlquist, Harold James Dahlquist, 74, longtime resident of Proctor, passed away, at his home, Wednesday, December 17, 2008.
He was born November 3, 1934, in Duluth to Lawrence and Frances Dahlquist. Jim was a graduate of Proctor High School. Immediately after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the USS Shangri-La, in the Pacific Theater.
Jim’s love of life was flying air planes. While in Michigan, he worked his way up to a certified flight instructor and for a period of time did crop spraying. After moving to Denver, Jim worked as a gem cutter. Upon his return to Duluth, he worked on the Great Lakes as an oiler. The “Burns Harbor” was the last ship on which Jim served.
During his retirement years, Jim enjoyed working in his garage, camping in the Black Hills with his son and hiking in the woods with his beloved dog, Morgan.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Audrey Bertrand and a brother, Robert “Waldo” Dahlquist.
He is survived by his children, Jim (Jungmi) Dahlquist, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Jayme Christine and her husband, James Klueg; five grandchildren, Nick, Natalie, Trevor, Erika and Robert; his sister, Orpha Stoner, of Cottage Grove, Minn.; numerous relatives and friends. Jim will be greatly missed.
A gathering and informal service was held Tues., Dec. 23 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
