Helen E. Carlenberg, Helen E. Carlenberg, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1931, passed away on Wed., Nov. 21, 2007, in New York City, N.Y. She was 95.

Helen was born Sept. 8, 1912 to Ruben and Augusta (Kochinski) Carlenberg in Duluth. After graduating from PHS, she moved to New York. Helen worked for Railway Express and continued to live in New York City after her retirement.

Helen was preceded in death by her father and mother and a brother Wallace.

She is survived by a brother Ronald (Elli) Carlenberg, one niece and one nephew.

Rosalie Sandra Person, Rosalie Sandra Person, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1930, died Sat., Dec. 8, 2007, in Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Cloquet. She was 95.

Rosalie was born July 28, 1912 at the home farm near Elde’s corner. She married Chris K. Person on Jan. 17, 1953. She worked at Nopeming with special diets and at Hultkrantz Market. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and Pine Hill Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading her Finnish bible and singing hymns, and loved traveling and fishing with Chris.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chris, and siblings Larry, Arne, Rudy, Dagmar, Lillian and Sanelma.

Rosalie is survived by her niece Karen (Paul) Sample Sr. and their children Dagmar Skutevik and Paul Jr., special family friends MaryRae and Tom Annear and Elinor and Burt Schweiger, and other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services Wed., Dec. 12, 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of The Holy Trinity, Duluth with visitation one hour prior to the service, and at Utica Lutheran Church, Mt. Sterling, Wis. on Sat., Dec. 15 at 1 p.m., also with visitation one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or your local food bank.

Leonard “Red” Lundeen, Leonard “Red” Lundeen passed away in Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth on Wed., Nov. 28, 2007. He was 79.

He was born in Duluth to Joe and Meta Lundeen on May 1, 1928. Leonard graduated from Denfeld High School in 1946. He served as a paratrooper in the Army Airborne Division for two years. Leonard married Carol Peterson on Aug. 26, 1950. He attended UMD where he played football and hockey. He was employed as a grain superintendent for 42 years at Farmers Union GTA and Harvest States. Leonard was a member of the All American Club and Duluth Curling Club. He was a past member of the Elks, Mason’s and GEAPS. He coached the Lower Chester and Stewart’s youth bantam hockey for twenty years. He was the founder of the Stewart’s Bantam program along with Dick Stewart. He also played fast pitch softball for West Duluth and slow pitch softball with Stewart’s.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Meta.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Carol, his son David (Mary) Lundeen of Duluth, daughter Barb (Stephen) Lewis of Duluth, brother Warren Lundeen of Pike Lake, grandchildren Lindsey Lundeen, Lauren Lundeen, Bill Lewis, John Lewis, Tom Lewis and Jimmy Lewis, all of Duluth, and many friends.

Mildred Vukelich, Mildred Vukelich, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1941, passed away on Mon., Dec. 3, 2007, in St. Mary’s Hospice. She was 85.

The Zenith Terrace resident was born at home in West Duluth on Nov. 27, 1922 to Werner and Ingrid Simonson. During Mili’s childhood her father tore down a hotel, and in exchange for wages he was given enough lumber to build a modest house outside of Proctor. She worked for R S Patrick sorting industrial diamonds. While working there, she took a train to Norfolk, Virginia (1943) to marry her high school sweetheart just before he was shipped out for service in the Navy. As a widow, she moved to Los Angeles and worked for North American Aircraft as “Rosie the Riveter”, placing the outside rivet on the side panel of the P51. She returned to Duluth where she married John Vukelich, whom she had known all her life, on Nov. 8, 1946. She was a head bookkeeper for Electrolux for many years, then she and John worked for her brother L.W. Simonson, General Contractor. She did the books while her babies slept or played. For a short time she worked at St. Mary’s Coffee Shop, and at the Frost Top in Duluth Heights, which was across the street from her home of 50 years. Mili started working for Target in 1961, she opened with the store in 1962 and is easily remembered as the smiling lady who cashed checks. She retired early on a medical disability from Target in 1978. Zenith Terrace was their home from 2000 until 2006. Diamond Willow (Cloquet) cared for her during her last year of life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clifford Thompson (1943), and a brother Lawrence (1990). Her husband John of nearly 60 years, whom she loved dearly, died June 21, 2006.

Surviving are her son Thomas (Linda), daughter Dianne (Paul Buckentin) of Duluth, granddaughter Gretchen (Dr. Andrew Baltus) of Boston, grandson Geoffrey (Kate Ross, fiancé) of Duluth, sister Margaret (Bud Broman) and their children of Minneapolis and sister/cousin Pearl Wedlund of Denver.

A funeral service was held in Sunrise Funeral Chapel Saturday. Interment Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lillian (Zebott) Johnson, Lillian (Zebott) Johnson, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1939, died Tues., Dec. 4, 2007, in Solvay Hospice House. She was 86.

Lillian was born August 7, 1921, to Henry and Ida (Stebner) Zebott. She worked in the shipyards in Seattle and Tacoma, Wash. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran church in Cloquet and the AARP. Lillian enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and traveling with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl (Bill) in 1995, brothers Harry, Percy, Roger, Irwin and Milton Zebott, and sisters Hazel Hagen and Etta Zebott.

Lillian is survived by her children Joyce (Lee) Houtz of Carlton and Glenn (Gerry Tarnowski) Johnson of Duluth, her sister Gladys Rossberg of Gig Harbor, Wash., grandchildren Becky Johnson of Bloomington, Robin Bottila of Esko, Patrick (Michele) Walsh, Heather (Mark) Anderson and Lori Walsh (Mitch Erikkila), all of Cloquet, great-grandchildren Brittany, Brooke and Bryce Bottila, Taylor and Tanner Anderson, and Morgan and Jacob Walsh, sister-in-law Mabel Lessard, and nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank St. Mary’s Hospice for the care and friendship they gave Lillian.

Services were held Sat., Dec. 8, 2007, in Augustana Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Hospice and Palliative Care, 407 E. 3rd. Street Duluth, MN 55805.
