George H. “Bud” Carlson, George H. “Bud” Carlson, who was born in Munger, passed away Fri., Oct. 13, 2006, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 83.

The Esko resident was born to John and Ruth (Roseen) Carlson. George served in World War II with the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was married to Gretchen Ruhnke on Aug. 2, 1951. He worked for the USPS until he retired after 30 years of service in 1977. He enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening, fishing, camping and being with his family. George loved being a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marjorie Starasinich, sons Howard and Timothy, and grandchildren David, Kimberly, and Andrew.

He is survived by his wife Gretchen, daughter Donnis McKowski of Duluth, sons Daniel of Esko, Jeffery (Jaiy) of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Mark (Candis) of Proctor, grandchildren Todd, Brett, Amy, Danya, Carrie, Jad, Kelly, Joshua, Adam, Dawn, Trysa, Tiffany, Kristin, and Kelsey, and great-grandchildren Nick, Eric, Sydney, Mikaylah, Ashlynn, Alexis, Chloe, Cassadie, Angie, Devon, Dillon, Gavin, Cooper and Brayden, and sisters Dorothy Elliott and Lois Ivanovich of Duluth;.

A celebration of his life was held Oct. 21, 2006 in the Proctor Moose Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local food shelf or The Solway Township Cemetery, 4029 Munger Shaw Rd., Cloquet, MN 55720 in George's memory.

Viola Christina Stankiewicz, Viola Christina Stankiewicz went to be with her husband in Heaven on Sat., Oct. 21, 2006. She was 81.

She was born April 21, 1925 to Henry and Elsa Anderson of Duluth. She graduated from Central High School in 1944. Viola worked for the Duluth News Tribune, as a teacher's aid at Lincoln Elementary School and taught Sunday School at Temple Baptist Church.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents, husband Adolph, sister Norma Foster, son Dale, and grandson Frank.

She is survived by children Ross, Ryan, and Roy (Lori), grandchildren Michael (Angie), Ashlee, Andrea, James, great-grandchildren Gage, Wyatt, Lily, Emily, and Laurel, and her sister's husband William Foster. Viola will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched.

Funeral service was held in Lincoln Park Community Church. Burial at Sunrise Cemetery.

Richard “Dick” William Pickus, Richard “Dick” William Pickus of Saginaw died peacefully with his family by his side on Sun., Oct. 22, 2006 in St. Eligius Health Care Center, Duluth, where he had been a resident for 15 years. He was 72.

He was born July 10, 1934 in Prior Lake to William and Meta Pickus, attended Proctor and lived most of his life in Saginaw. On May 14, 1960 Dick married Janice Leno in Cloquet. He worked for Conwed and USG from 1956 until retiring due to health reasons in 1989. Dick was a member of Local Union 158. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching sports, fishing, hunting and just spending time outdoors.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father Theodore Swenson, and a brother James on December 24, 2005.

Richard is survived by his wife Janice of Cloquet, sons Gerald (Wendy) and David, both of Cloquet, daughters Diane (Kenneth) Stevens of Ramsey, Jeannette (Philip) Shovein of Proctor and Denise (Joe) Bodell of Duluth, brothers Clarence (Marlene) Pickus of Alborn, Ronald (Bobbie) Swenson of California and Dale (Sharon) Swenson of Duluth, sisters Betty nee Pickus (Don) Freeman of Hermantown, Mary (John) Sundquist of Cloquet and Barbara (Mike) Wilson of Cook; 15 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, and two expected.

Visitation will continue from 12:00 noon until the 1:00 p.m. funeral service in Northland Funeral Home with burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Industrial Township.

Floid A. Swanson,

Floid A. Swanson of Proctor died Sun., Oct. 22, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul. He was 72.

He was born May 3, 1934 in Saginaw. Floid graduated in 1952 from Proctor High School and joined the Minnesota National Guard. Floid served as a volunteer firefighter and constable of Grand Lake Township for many years. He was a truck driver for Arrowhead Concrete and retired in 1992 after 40 years of service. Floid had many interests including fishing, horseshoes, cooking, and gardening. He spent 29 summers at Edelweiss Campground in Sturgeon Lake. Floid also built R/C airplanes and belonged to the Duluth R/C Club. He was a handyman who could fix anything including the kids' toys. Floid always had a helping hand and took pride in all he did.

He was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Irene Swanson.

Floid is survived by his wife Joyce, children Susan (Bill) Frykman, Steve (Neva) Swanson, Delaine (Dale) Gradin, Barbara (John) Reider, and Kelly (Donald) Welch, 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, siblings Herman (Marsha) Swanson, Roberta (Max) Scheper, Howard (Nancy) Swanson, and Viola (Dwight) Poss, several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral service was held in the First Memorial Funeral Chapel. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Mary (Bester) Ellison, Mary (Bester) Ellison of Duluth, died from complications of pneumonia Thurs., Oct. 19, 2006. Mary graduated from Denfeld High School in 1978. She was 46.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Lanie Bester, her grandparents, and her fiancé Paul.

Mary is survived by her children Georgina “Gina,” serving in the U.S. Navy in Japan, Mikey and Jayme, both of Port Wing, Wis., brothers Bill (Cheryl) Bester of Austin, Texas, Dan Bester and Jim (Darcy) Bester, both of Duluth, sisters Bonnie (Jim) Castonguay of Duluth, Jackie (Brad) Edgerton and Barb (John) LeGarde, both of Hermantown, stepmother Lois Bester of Proctor, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service was held.

Glen Gilbert Chantelois, Glen Gilbert Chantelois of Railview Apts., Proctor, died Wed., Oct. 18, 2006 in St. Luke’s Hospice. He was 90.

He was born on July 24, 1916 in Iron River, Wisc. to Eli Napoleon and Anna Carolyn (Christopherson) Chantelois. He was a long time Proctor resident. Glen attended Proctor High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant and serving with the 8th Army Air Force as an engineering crew chief with the 392nd Bombardier group, stationed in England. He received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement. Glen married Barbara Mae Slosson on May 6, 1943 in Duluth. He was employed as a truck driver for Moland Brothers Trucking and Glendenning Trucking for many years, until retirement. He was a member of the Lind-Gordon-Berg American Legion Post No. 106 and Teamsters Union Local No. 346. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara in March, 2006, sister Nina Hengel and brother Ernest “Heck” Chantelois.

Survivors include daughters Nina Marie (Thomas) Bijold and Billie Jean (Robert) Koski, both of Proctor, grandchildren Gwendolyn Bijold, Michael (Lisa) Bijold, Rebecca (Marcus) Ward and Todd (Susan) Koski, great-grandchildren Kyle, Madison, Amanda, Paige, Alex, Jacob, Dakota, Dustyn, Mike and Dan, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tom Heinitz, Dr. Jones, Dr. De La Garza and the staff of St. Luke’s E.R., 6th floor and Hospice Unit, for the care and compassion they gave to our father.

A private family service was held at Glen’s request.

Burial at Oneota Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
