Judith M. (Ludwig) Carl, Former Proctor resident Judith M. (Ludwig) Carl, died Sat., Sept. 17, 2005 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 65.

She was born June 24, 1940 in Duluth to John and Nora (Moran) Ludwig. She married Robert Carl on Feb. 11, 1967. She worked as a foster care provider for St. Louis County for 28 years and as a guardian Ad Litem. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the American Legion of Proctor. She was very active at St. Michael’s School, having served as chairperson for their Spring Carnival.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Carl in 1997, son Michael in 1999, and her parents.

Judith is survived by her children Shannon Carl, Brian (Denise), Angel Carl, and Kyle, all of Duluth, granddaughter Stephanie Carl, and a brother Ronald (Virginia) of Ham Lake, Minn.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Bill Fournier officiating. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.

Lillie Ann O’Connor, Joan (William) Peterson of Munger and Marian Jannucci of Proctor are saddened by the death of their mother and sister, respectively. Lillie Ann O’Connor, a longtime resident of Duluth, died Sun., Sept. 18, 2005, while at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation. She was 97.

She was born June 8, 1908, in Two Harbors to John and Lillian Schultz. In 1930, Lillie married Edward M. O’Connor. She worked for Chun King for several years in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

Lillie was preceded in death by her husband Edward in 1977, her parents, sons Michael E. and Robert P., a sister Leona Brouillette, brothers Albert and Dolphis LeMay and son-in-law John Hagberg.

She is also survived by her other children Marilyn Hagberg of Aurora and David (Linda) O’Connor of Duluth, nine grandchildren Stephanie (Tom), Kevin, Kyle (Roberta), Teresa (Todd), MaryAnn, Bob (Juanita), Chuck (Jody), Sean (Debbie) and David, 17 great-grandchildren, daughter-in-law Gloria and many other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Pike Lake. The Rev. Fr. Dale Nau officiated. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Florence ‘Flo’ Doll, Services were held last week for Florence ‘Flo’ Doll, of Saginaw. She died peacefully Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness with leukemia. She was 72.

She was born Aug. 26, 1933 in rural Fairmont, N.D., to Henry and Mary (Schiery) Speiser. She was a graduate of Fairmont High School and later worked as a telephone operator in Whapeton, N.D. In 1952, she married Chester A. Doll and shortly after moved to what is now presently Hoyt Lakes, and was considered an original ‘mudder’. Flo was a longtime resident and business owner in Hoyt Lakes and later retired in Saginaw with her life partner, Steve Helmer. While in Saginaw, she worked part time for Target in Duluth. Flo’s full time passion was taking care of all of God’s critters.

She is preceded in death by her father, Henry; and son-in-law, Mike Depew.

Survivors include her life partner, Steve Helmer of Saginaw; mother, Mary Speiser of Hoyt Lakes; children, Diana (Dale) Hedin of Hoyt Lakes, Deborah (Eddie) Hobbs of Great Mills, Md., and Theresa (Terrance) Albright of Hoyt Lakes; sister, Eleanor McAloney of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, John (Darlene) Speiser of Fargo; Steve’s sons, Clayton (Silva) Helmer of St. Paul and Craig Helmer of St. Cloud; eight grandchildren, Shawn Depew, Derek and Jolene Hobbs, Jasmine (Josh) Skelton, Nicholas and Marissa Albright, Ethan and Elliot Helmer.

Services were held last week in Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes. Rev. Terrance Stratton will officiate. Burial was in Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Alice ‘Irene’ Parker, Alice ‘Irene’ Parker of Midway Road, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 at Viewcrest Health Center. She was 80.

She was born in Midway Township on Oct. 30, 1924 to John and Lila (Salo) Klemo. Alice was a 1942 graduate of Esko High School. Following graduation, she worked for DuPont in Duluth for two years. She married Bill Parker in 1946 in California. A resident of California for 41 years, Alice had worked as a secretary for California Manufactur-ers Association for 20 years. Following her retirement from there, she worked for the City of Hope, a charitable organization in Los Angeles. Alice retired in 1986. She moved back to Midway Township in 1987 to care for her mother. She was a member of Pine Hill Lutheran Church and treasurer of the ladies guild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in December of 1963; and by her sister, Betty Hambly.

Alice is survived by her sisters, Shirley Liupakka of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Geraldine Durham of Sterling, Ill.; her nephews, Gary (Carol) Liupakka of Superior, Wisc.; Jon Hambly of Atlanta, Ga., Dennis (Pat) Durham of Alexandria, Va., Kevin Durham of Leadville, Colo.; her nieces, Cindy (Harold) Nelson of Fairfax, Va., and Canine (Kevin) McCauley of Omaha, Neb.; and great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held last week in Pine Hill Lutheran Church, Rev. Daryl Carlson officiating. Inurnment will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Helen McGinn, Services were held earlier this week for Helen McGinn of Proctor and Hibbing. She died Fri., Sept. 23, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. She was 83.

She was born in St. Paul Park, Minn. on Nov. 22, 1921. She worked for many years as a member of the hospital auxiliary, in both Cloquet and Hibbing, and especially enjoyed the people she helped as a Befriender and time spent with her Renewal friends from St. Leo’s Parish of Hibbing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harols, Murtis, and Arno Mahoney, and sister Catherine Mahoney.

Helen is survived by her husband Francis ‘Fran’, now of Proctor, sons Michael (Marge) McGinn of Duluth and James McGinn of Minneapolis, daughter Marilyn (Kermit) Nielsen of Cloquet, grandchildren Michael, Deborah, Christine, Jamie and Barry, great-grandchildren Shawn, Caitlyn, Bradly, Holly, Michael and Sarah, special friend Samantha, and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hibbing with the Rev. Justin Fish celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Robert L. Vanneste, Robert L. Vanneste, the quintessential Proctorite who did everything here except graduate from Proctor High School, died Sun., Sept. 25, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was 80.

He was born at home in Proctor on April 7, 1925 to Maurice and Elsie (VanKisper) Vanneste. Bob was a graduate of Denfeld High School. He was an Air Force veteran of WW II serving in the battles of Ardennes and Rhineland. Bob returned to Proctor to work for the DM&IR Railroad as a carman and supervisor of the car department until his retirement in 1980. He was a volunteer fire chief of Proctor and served as a councilman. He was a member of the American Legion, Proctor Moose, Lions, and VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents, by Lillian Vanneste, by his daughter Barb MacDonald, and by his brother George.

Bob is survived by his wife Blanche of Proctor, his daughter Terrie (Steve) Carlson of Proctor, his grandchildren Kim (Steve) Elmer of Toivola, Minn., Tammy (Frank) Ziesmer of Duluth, Tony (Laura) Carlson of Proctor, and Lori (Randy) Reinke of Saginaw, and by ten great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Thursday. It will be followed by military honors by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to the VFW would be appreciated.
