James Randolph Marshall, Services were held yesterday for James Randolph Marshall. The Ridgewood Road resident died Sun., Sept. 17, 2006, at Franciscan Health Center, Duluth. He was 75.
He was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Duluth. Jim was a graduate of Duluth Central High School, class of 1949. He was a graduate of the University of Omaha, 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. Jim was a salesman extraordinaire for Thermofax machines, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and Columbia Steel Casting Company. He and his wife, Beverly, owned and operated Chippewa Camping Outfitters. He is remembered as the first Bombardier Ski-Doo snowmobile dealer in the United States. Jim outfitted and guided numerous canoe trips into the BWCAW. He also operated a scuba diving shop in Duluth. From 1968 until his retirement in 2003, he worked for Columbia Steel Casting Company. He was a charter member of Skyline Rotary, Sept. 1972, with 25 plus years of perfect attendance. He was a member of the Society of Mining Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, Palestine Lodge No. 79, A.F. and A.M. Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Duluth, Kitchi Gammi Club, Isle Royale Boaters Association, Isle Royale Family and Friends Association. Jim was the captain of his own boat, Skipper Sam II. He was a lifetime member of Duluth Power Squadron and was Port Captain for Duluth for the Great Lakes Cruising Club. Captain Jim was the proud co-owner and chairman of Lake Superior Port Cities Inc., publisher of Lake Superior Magazine. His knowledge of Lake Superior, storytelling abilities and sense of humor were legendary. He traveled widely over Lake Superior and the hospitality of Skipper Sam II was well known in every port he visited. He contributed a bimonthly column in Lake Superior Magazine called ‘Lake Superior Journal.’ He authored the book ‘Lake Superior Journal’ and was author/contributor and editor of the book ‘Shipwrecks of Lake Superior.’ His efforts were recognized this year with the Labovitz Lifetime Achievement Award by the UMD Center for Economic Development.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Rand Marshall, first wife Beverly (Erickson) in 1976, and son Randy Marshall in 1993.
He is survived by his wife Jan Biga, who he married in 1991, sister Marjorie Eckstrom of Port Isabel, Texas, daughters Cindy Marshall (Paul) Hayden of Two Harbors and Bonnie (Jan) Reyers of Afton, daughter-in-law Jackie (Dave) Smith of Duluth, step-daughters Kay (Patrick Spott) Biga of Duluth and Tracy (Duncan) MacLean of Claremont, Calif., grandchildren William (Becky) Marshall of Coon Rapids, Jacquelyn “JJ” (Jim) Fortin of Superior, Eric Reyers of Los Angeles, Calif., Kent Reyers of Hudson, Wis., Anne Reyers of Afton, Minn., Robert Hayden of Madison, Wis., Scott (Ginger) Hayden of St. Louis, Mo., Emily, Hal and Leo Spott of Duluth, and Paul MacLean of Claremont, Calif., mother-in-law Myrtle Wicklund of Duluth, six great-grandchildren, and four nieces.
Services were yesterday in Pike Lake Comnmunity Church. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
Ruth E. Cardinal, Joyce (Bud) Drennen of Proctor is mourning the death of her sister Ruth E. Cardinal. The lifelong Duluth resident passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on Wed., Sept. 13, 2006. She was 78.
Ruth was born on July 22, 1928 to Axel and Dagny (Johnson) Ecklund.
Ruth is also survived by her husband of 61 years Lloyd Cardinal, daughter Pat (Dan) Anderson of Branson, Mo., son Joe (Nita) Cardinal of Little Elm, Texas, grandchildren Chris (Andy) De Poe, Jim Lehet, Tina (Jim) Brooks, Travis (Jessi) Cardinal and Tricia Cardinal, great-grandchildren Katie Olson De Poe, Parker and Griffin Lehet and John Ray Cardinal, and her brother Dick (Millie) Ecklund.
A celebration of Ruth’s life was held last Tues., Sept. 19, in the Solway Town Hall.
Jaymi Marie Wendt, A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thurs., Sept. 21, 2006) for Jaymi Marie Wendt, formerly of Proctor. She got her wings on Sat., Sept. 16, 2006 in Rogers, Minn. as a result of a tornado. She was 10.
Jaymi was born Nov. 29, 1995 to Randy and Jodi (Fish) Wendt in Duluth. She was involved with cheerleading in Rogers, which she loved. She was a “Little Leader” for her sister’s squad. Jaymi was loved by all who knew her, and her smile melted everyone’s heart. Jaymi was an eternal optimist.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather Walt Fish, her Uncle Craig Fish, great-grandparents August “Bum” and Bonnie “Nanny” Jacobson, Marie Burke, Victor and Myrnie Kolenda.
Jaymi is survived by her parents Randy and Jodi Wendt, siblings Jake, Jessie, Jordan Wendt and Bryan O’Neil, grandparents Marjorie Fish, Shirley Makela, Paul “Butch” Stotler, Ronald Wendt, Willeen Williams, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, special “best” friends Samantha and Brittany, and many other special people she loved.
The service will be held at Hermantown Community Church, 4880 Maple Grove Road in Hermantown. Visitation will be one hour prior to the 1 p.m. service at the church. There will be a reception following the service.
Joanne Lee (McCauley) Melde, Joanne Lee (McCauley) Melde, who was united in marriage to Harold James Melde on June 6, 1964 in Twig, passed away peacefully on Wed., Sept. 13, 2006 after a very long and courageous battle with multiple illnesses.
Joanne was born to Louis and Ruth McCauley on June 2, 1944. She was the youngest of 14 children and attended schools in the Duluth area. Joanne took a proactive approach with the illnesses she had contracted. Her doctors called her “The Miracle Girl”, a title all too fitting as she continued to beat the odds, kept a very positive attitude and fought back hard in the face of adversity.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ilene, Helen, Doris and Kaye, and brothers James and Daniel.
She is survived by four sisters, three brothers, her husband, four children, seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Interment at Oneota Cemetery.
