Shirley McGoff, Shirley McGoff, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1943 and “loved news from her home town” keeping in touch with friends by subscribing to the Journal for 58 years, died July 27, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. She was 79.
Shirley was born in Duluth on October 19, 1926 to Alvin and Olga Johnson. She moved to California during World War II. Shirley resided in Burbank for over 50 years. She was employed by the Burbank Unified School District for over 34 years. Her career began at Providencia Elementary. After completing courses at Valley College, she moved to John Muir Middle School where she became an Office Manager and Principal’s Secretary. After serving the district for many years, Shirley retired to travel and enjoy her life.
She is survived by three children: Nancy Helquist of Van Nuys, David of Northridge and Jeffery of Burbank; four grandchildren, two great grand children, and her husband Edward McGoff.
A memorial service was held in mid August. Burial was by the Neptune Society.
Mary 'Sue' Christensen, Sandee (Dick) Carroll of Proctor is mourning the death of her sister, Mary 'Sue' Christensen. She died unexpectedly Thursday, August 31, 2006 at her Duluth residence. She was 63.
She was born May 4, 1943 in Duluth to Sidney and Louise (Benson) Nelson. Mary graduated from Denfeld High School in 1961. On July 15, 1962, she married Richard Christensen in Duluth. Mary owned and operated Jim's Hamburgers along with her husband. She loved playing BINGO and reading.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 2000; son, Rick; parents; and sisters, Darlene and Bobbie.
Mary is also survived by her daughter, Kristy (Jim) Hill; son, Denny (Mary) Christensen; grandchildren, Jason, Brittany, Nikki, Megan, Tiffany, Katie and Nitasha; brothers, Bill (Judy) Nelson and Buddy (Donna) Nelson; sisters, Barb (Tom) Quick, and Bev (Allen) Mansfield and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Services were Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at First Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rolf Fure officiating. Burial is in New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet.
Margaret S. Erickson, Margaret S. Erickson, of Pike Lake passed away at St. Luke's Hospital on Aug. 17, 2006. She was 76.
Margaret was born in Duluth on Sept. 15, 1929 to Gustaf and Bertha (Martin) Kusch. On May 11, 1957, she was united in marriage to Hugh Erickson. She worked as a secretary for the Air National Guard for 30 years and was a member of the Pike Lake Sewing Club.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Richard, and Mason and sisters, Gladys and Helen.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Hugh; brother, Marvin (Joanne) Kusch and many nieces and nephews.
Burial is at Sunrise Memorial Park.
Wayne Edward Dembroski, Wayne Edward Dembroski, of Brookston, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospice. He was 46.
Wayne was born Dec. 1, 1959 in Superior and graduated from Superior Senior High School and served in the United States Marine Corps. He was united in marriage to LoriLei Carlson on August 2, 1987 at her folks' home and have since lived in Brookston. Together with her parents; they operated Surplus Depot in Cloquet. Wayne was a member of Fond du Lac Tribe of Ojibway, Lake Superior Band.
Preceding Wayne in death were his adoptive father, Charles Dembroski and his brother-in-law, Keith Carlson.
Wayne is survived by his wife, LoriLei; and her parents, Ione and Roger Carlson of Saginaw; his mother, Kathleen Dembroski of Superior; his father, Perry Smith of Na Tah Waush, Minn.; sisters Donna (Tom Waldburger) Dembroski of Minoqua, Wis.; and Charlene (Paul) Lind of Duluth; and brothers, Jon (Brenda) Dembroski of Indianapolis, Ind. and Charles Dembroski of Superior; and Wayne's brother-in-law, Bruce Carlson of Saginaw, Minn. He is further survived by his half-brothers and half-sisters, Roger (Lisa) Smith of East Grand Forks, Minn.; Jeff (Mary) Smith of Little Falls, Minn.; Kim Smith of Stratford, VI; and Michelle Smith of Little Falls, Minn.
A memorial service was held Wed., Sept. 6, 2006 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Full military honors was presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
Mary I. 'Dolly' (Amendola) Michelizzi, Sam (Patty) Michelizzi of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Mary I. 'Dolly' (Amendola) Michelizzi. She died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006 in her Duluth home. She was 84.
She was born July 3, 1922 in Chisholm, Minn., to Thomas and Angelina (Colalillo) Amendola. She married Samuel Michelizzi. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel in 1993; parents; step-mother, Nellie Amendola; brothers, Frank Amendola and Edward Lanaro; sister, Dorothy Jeanetta.
She is also survived by her other children, Mary (Don) Drigans of St. Paul Park, Minn., Michael (Trish) Michelizzi, Kathleen Michelizzi, Patricia (Richard) Lomoe, Carmen (Terry) Rich all of Duluth and special mother to Eddie Lanaro; sisters, Carmen (Edward) Orman of Duluth, Susan Peverstorf and Jean (Bruce) Hansen of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Thomas Amendola of Duluth; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Steven J. Scinocca, Steven J. Scinocca of Saginaw died Sat., Sept. 2, 2006 in his home. He was 47.
Steve was born March 30, 1959 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Ron and Carol (Tyo) Scinocca. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne from 1979 to 1983. Steve worked for Billman’s as a property manager for several years. He loved the outdoors and to fish with a capital F. He also loved hunting, archery, golfing and collecting agates.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife, his father Ron, a brother Jim and his stepmother Carol.
He is survived by his mother Carol Zillmer of Duluth, brothers Ron Scinocca and Mike (Lisa) Scinocca, both of Duluth, sister Shelly (Tim) Nick of Duluth, half brothers Douglas and Todd Linskie, both of Duluth, half sister Linda Linskie of Duluth, nieces Katie Scinocca and Maelynn Linskie, nephew Joey Nick and his dog George.
Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
Charles E. “Erv” Lindberg, Charles E. “Erv” Lindberg, who was born in Pike Lake and along with his family lived in Moose Lake during the great fire of 1918 before returning to Pike Lake, died Fri., Sept. 8, 2006 at the Franciscan Health Center with his family by his side. He was 95.
He was born Jan. 5, 1911 to Charles and Christina Lindberg. He owned and operated Lindberg Sanitation Service for 33 years, retiring in 1976.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Julia Fleming Lindberg, second wife Kathryn Swanson Lindberg, sisters Alfie Eyeberg, Inez Nelson, Myrtella Semerau and Ethel Nelson, and great-grandson Jacob Shadof.
Charles is survived by daughter Judy (Steve) Robinson of Sterling, Alaska, sons Jim (Lorraine) of Anchorage, Alaska, Dick (Danilee) of Duluth and Jack (Kathy) of Proctor, brothers Clifford (Stella) of Duluth, Richard (Martha “Mardy”) of Hermantown and Kenneth, of Costa Mesa, Calif., 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial is at Oneota Cemetery.
Nancy Rae Vanneste, Nancy Rae Vanneste of Esko, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1958, passed away Wed., Sept. 6, 2006 at her home. She was 70.
She was born Dec. 13, 1935 in Duluth, to Ragner and Alice (Nordberg) Erickson. Nancy was united in marriage to Gene Vanneste on Oct. 29, 1955 in Duluth.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband Gene, sons Doug Vanneste of St. Louis Park and Stephen Vanneste of Grand Forks, ND, daughters Kim (George) Miller of Carlton and Pam (Joe) Kloss of Oshkosh, Wis., brother Wayne (Barb) Erickson of New Mexico, grandchildren Aaron Kloss, Tracy Kloss, Raven Vanneste, Chris Miller, Jody Miller and Matthew Miller, one great-granddaughter, and a very special family pet, “Bogie”.
A graveside service was held, Tues., Sept. 12, 2006 at Oneota Cemetery in Duluth.
Myrtle Becky Maire, Myrtle Becky Maire of Duluth, formerly of Madeline Island, died Fri., Sept. 8, 2006 in Bayshore Health Care Center in Duluth. She was 90.
She was born August 5, 1916 on Madeline Island, Wis. to Gust and Martha (Dahlin) Erickson. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1934. Becky attended UW Madison and later UW Superior. On October 15, 1940, she married Albert R. Maire in Superior. Becky was a member of the Duluth Lioness Club, the oldest charter member of St. John’s United Church of Christ on Madeline Island and a former member of Peace UCC in Duluth.
Becky was preceded in death by her husband Al on May 22, 2002, brothers Ed, Emil, and Leonard Erickson and sisters Esther Erickson, Ellen Russell, and Dorothy Ann Anderson.
She is survived by her son Paul (Kristen) of Snowmass, Colo., daughter Jean Busse of Lexington, NC, grandchildren Becky (Shawn) Bopp of Savage, Gina (Neil) Raske of Farmington, Paula Maire of Minneapolis, and Tina (Mike) Barry of Lexington, NC, step-grandchildren Melanie (Sean) Alavi of Atlanta, Ga. and Leif Hughes of Hotchkiss, Colo., great-grandchildren Brooke and Breanna Raske, Connor and Madeline Bopp, and Justin Barry, step-great-grandchild Nadia Alavi, her lifelong friend Ardie Fischer of Walker and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held next summer on Madeline Island.
William D. Kaukonen, William D. Kaukonen, who taught in the Proctor School District for 31 years before retiring in 1999, passed away on Tues., Sept. 5, 2006 from cancer.
He recently moved to Bemidji to live with his sister Judy and her husband Nick. He died in the presence of those who loved him. He loved to hunt and fish and spent many summers guiding sports fishermen at King for a Day Charters and Camp on the Klutina River in Alaska. He was a great cook and will be remembered especially for his delicious breads and sweets, which he enjoyed sharing with his friends. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and was an expert at telling “Finlander” jokes.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Doris Kaukonen of Virginia, Minn.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Judy and Nick Faymoville of Bemidji, special friends Bruce and Judy Gianunzio of Duluth who cared for him in their home during his cancer treatments, longtime friends Jack and Marlys Phillips of Duluth, and his “adopted” brother Daryl Olson of Fairbanks, Alaska, and his family.
