Wayne C. Bibeau, Wayne C. Bibeau, whose classmates gathered at his home just two weeks ago for their annual reunion, died Fri., Aug. 15 in a Duluth hospital. He was 70.
He was born April 3, 1933, in Duluth to Wilfred and Helen (Gustafson) Bibeau. He graduated from Morgan Park High School and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was a switchman, brakeman, and conductor for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years until his retirement. Wayne enjoyed spending time as a ranger at Enger Park Golf Course. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. Wayne was an avid golfer, bowler, and enjoyed biking, reading, yard work, and spending winters in Florida. He coached little league baseball, softball, and basketball for many years.
He is survived by his wife Leona (Katchmark-Pionk), son Vinnie (Connie) of Belleville, Ill., daughter Kathryn (Paul) Shykes of Cloquet, grandson Paul Shykes, Jr., step-sons Scott (Karen) Pionk of Hermantown and Craig Pionk of Proctor, step-daughters Carmen (James) Cuhel of Superior, Wis., Christi (Mark) Slattengren of Duluth and Stephanie (Rusty) Johnson of Minneapolis, 15 step-grandchildren, a step-great-grandson, a brother Wilfred (Fay) Bibeau of Duluth, sisters Shirley (Robert) Chambers of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Joanne (Ralph) Arezzo of Duluth, and many relatives and friends.
Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiated at the services. Interment was at Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
Betty Jane Elstad, Betty Jane Elstad, who was a member of the All-American Trap Shooting Team died unexpectedly Fri., Aug. 15, 2003, in her Anderson Rd. home. Services were held earlier this week. She was 77.
She was born to Richard Toor and Peggy Kaspari and was a Proctor resident most of her life.
Betty was raised by her grandparents Katherine ?Nana? and Clarence Toor, as their own. She had lived in Tampa, Fla., for the past nine years, moving to Hermantown in June. She was a graduate of Proctor High School and Cosmetology Careers Unlimited. Betty was the owner and operator of the embroidery business, Silver Threads. She was a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. She held many Minnesota and Florida trap shooting titles. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially shopping with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son Ren (Susan) of Duluth, daughters Robin (Tony) McKinnon of Eagan, Minn. and Jodi (Bill) McLellan of Duluth, eight grandchildren, sisters Patricia Lowe of Proctor and Katherine (Kelly) Heegard of Twig, brother George (Jeanne) Toor of Prescott, Ariz., several nieces and nephews, and close friend Jerry Phillips of Parkton, Md.
Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.
Mardy Vatthauer, Proctor High School graduate Mardy Vatthauer of Starbuck died Fri., Aug. 15, 2003 in a Glenwood hospital. She was 60.
She was born July 1, 1943 in Duluth to Henry and Hazel (Zebott) Hagen. She worked in the guidance counseling office of Proctor High School after graduation. On July 9, 1965, she was united in marriage to Victor Vatthauer in Duluth They made their home in Duluth for four years, moved to Taylors Falls for two years, then moved to Starbuck where they have remained for the last 32 years. Despite a diagnosis of MS at an unusually young age, Mardy continued to live a full life.
Mardy was a member of the Fron Church Women?s Circle and the Barsness Homemakers.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Victor Vatthauer of Starbuck, her daughter, Cynthia (Donny) Ostrander of Glenwood, four grandchildren, two brothers, a sister and several nieces and a nephew.
Burial was in the Fron Lutheran Church Cemetery. Charles ?Joe? Harold Barber, Services will be held today (Thurs.) at 1:00 p.m. for Charles ?Joe? Harold Barber, who worked for the Proctor School District for 35 years as a school bus driver and custodian He died Sun., Aug. 17, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 86.
Joe was born in Duluth to Charles and Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Barber and lived in Midway Township and Proctor most of his life. On December 26, 1942, Charles married Esther Ostman and together they were married for sixty and a half years. Charles served in the Army as a private in the Motor School Detachment in Fort Riley, Kansas.
He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, Soderberg Hatchery and Great Lakes Ore Boats. He retired from the Proctor School District in June of 1978. Charles loved to fish, pitch horseshoes, walk, garden and pick agates. Joe was a pro in dousing (witching for water) for local wells. He was always there to help; building houses, garages, or anything that needed his help.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elizabeth ?Dimpy? and Charlotte and a brother, George.
Surviving are his wife, Esther; sons, Robert (Connie) and David (Joan) of Duluth and a daughter, Diane (Dirk) Carlson of Saginaw; four grandchildren, Ron (Mary) and Jeff Carlson, Emily (Chris) Benser and Laura Barber; 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12 Noon until the 1:00 p.m. service Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel.
Burial will be in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
Ruby Angeline Anderson Tannehill, Ruby Angeline Anderson Tannehill, who was born, baptized, raised, worked and graduated from Proctor, died Thurs., July 31, 2003, in Kalispell, Mont. She was 77.
She was born to Melvin and Lena (Haugen) Anderson. On Dec. 27, 1953 she married James Tannehill.
She is survived by her husband James, daughter Laurie (Gary) Morrison, sons Scott (Martha) and Tom (Lisa) and seven grandchildren, all of Kalispell, sisters LeVina (Walter) Carlson of Cloquet, Marie (Chester) Anderson of Aurora and Mildred (Arnold) Jarvimaki of Seattle, and a brother Floyd (Judy) Anderson of Laporte.
Services were held in Kalispell.
Brian C. ?Duck? Evjen, Don and Nina Kolenda of Munger are mourning the death of their son-in-law, Brian C. ?Duck? Evjen of Silver Bay. He died Sat., Aug. 16, 2003, at the age of 43.
He was born June 11, 1960, to Clifford and Betty (Knitter) Evjen in Two Harbors and was a lifelong resident of Silver Bay. After graduating from Kelley High School in 1978, and while attending night classes at Duluth Vo-Tech, he served a four-year plumbing apprenticeship with A.W. Kuettel & Sons at Reserve Mining Company, and later was employed by Reserve. He worked for a short time in Buffalo, Minn., where he earned his Master Plumber certification, then opened Duck?s Plumbing & Heating in Silver Bay. In 1991, he went to work at the Minnesota Veteran?s Home to prepare it for opening, and continued working there until his death. Duck was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, the Silver Beaver Gun Club, the Rowdy Riders Snowmobile Club and Softball Team, and the Camp Snoopy Hunting Club, and was active in Silver Bay Youth Hockey, and had served on the Silver Bay Rescue Squad.
Duck is also survived by his wife Robin, son Jake, his parents Clifford and Betty of Silver Bay, brothers-in-law David, Ron and Brad Kolenda, all of Munger, and Richard Kolenda of Proctor, a sister and two brothers, a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery in Beaver Bay Township.
Rose E. Boberg, Rose E. Boberg, who was born in Proctor and was a 1936 graduate of Proctor High School, died Wed., Aug. 20, 2003, in Duluth. She was 85.
She was born to Conrad and Palma (Husom) Hereid, and was a lifelong area resident.
She is survived by her husband John of Duluth, daughters Dawn (Robert) Stewart of Manchester, Mass., Joan (Roger) Schulstad of St. Paul, and Nann (William) Eckman of Superior, Wis., sister-in-law Helen Hereid of Duluth, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a grand puppy, Grace Rose, ?G.G.? who visited Rose often.
Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum.
June Alva (Bilsey) Larsen, June Alva (Bilsey) Larsen, who was born in Proctor, died Aug. 21, 2003, after suffering from Alzheimer?s and cancer. She was 78.
June was born on June 3, 1925, to Alva and Nels Bilsey. She attended Mahtowa and Carlton schools and was honored as homecoming queen in high school. She worked at St. Luke?s for over 20 years, retiring as a manager in the Personnel Department.
June is survived by her husband of 36 years Vernon, four children, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was at Augustana Cemetery.
