Rosa May Hervey, Rosa May Hervey, of Proctor, passed away August 8, 2008, at Golden Oaks in Proctor, surrounded by her family. She was 87.

She was born in Duluth on July, 13, 1921, to Emil and Rosa Meyer. Rose performed in a dance company as a young adult and went on to teach dance classes. Rose was trained to be a baker by her father and she owned and operated several bakeries in her lifetime. She and her late husband, Bud, were the proud owners of Rosebud’s Bakery in Motley, MN. Even after they retired, everyone who stopped by was offered coffee and cookies. Rosa was a member of the Enger and West Duluth Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frederick “Bud”, her parents and her brother, Bob.

Rosa is survived by her brother, Ronald (Barb) Meyer and her children, Eileen (Jerry) Molitor, Jean Southworth, Tom (Janet) Streu, Dan (Debbie) Streu, Kathy (Tim) Strom, Polly Streu, Judy Balach; 22 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to express its thanks to the Staff of Golden Oaks and to SMDC Hospice for the loving and compassionate care Rosa received.

A service was held Wednesday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Sam A. Parendo, Sam A. Parendo, who moved to Proctor in 1967 from Duluth, and worked for the Proctor School District for 11-1/2 years, as a bus driver, chief engineer and custodian in the former Junior and Senior high schools, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008 in St. Luke’s Hospice. He was 87.

He was born in Duluth on December 24, 1920 to Peter and Louise (Perala) Parendo. He was a graduate of Denfeld High School. He married Dorothy Weiss on Aug. 22, 1942 in Duluth. Sam was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving three years with the 103rd Infantry Division in the U.S. and overseas in France, Germany and Austria. He was awarded the Purple Heart in 1945. Sam was a galvanizing wire and nail operator and also worked as a crane operator in the welded fabric department for U.S. Steel Duluth works, retiring from there in 1974. He was a member of SOAR (Steelworkers Organized Active Retirees), Steelworkers Union Local No. 1028 and Public Employees Union Local No. 66. Sam was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor, Italian American Club and had been a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening in earlier years, and watching all types of sports, but most of all, he enjoyed his family and spending time with friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy in 1993, daughter, Jean Marie Parendo in 1973, daughter-in-law, Carol Parendo, great-granddaughter, Ashley Sobczak and brothers, Carl and John Parendo.

He is survived by his children, Anthony “Tony” (Alice) Parendo of Hermantown, Richard (special friend, Margaret) of Cloquet, Cathy (Jeff) Powers of Alexandria, MN., Steven (Luanne) Parendo of Duluth, and Annette (Kevin) Palmer of Cloquet; sister, Doris “Dora” Bellefeuille of Duluth; brother, Michael (Gloria) Parendo of Duluth; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friend, Jean Guimont of Duluth.

A Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor, was held Wednesday, Reverend Father Joel Hastings officiating. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Arlene P. Pearson, David (Jody) Pearson of Saginaw, and Laura (Mike) Miller of Proctor are mourning the death of their mother Arlene P. Pearson. The Two Harbors resident passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 at the Sunrise Home. She was 75.

She was born Feb. 11, 1933 to Verne and Pearl (Force) Brown in Two Harbors, where she grew up and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1951. She was employed at the House of Sweden and later at the telephone company office in Duluth. Arlene married Marvin Pearson in 1952 and together they raised their family of seven children in Two Harbors. She was a homemaker through the years and always put her family first. In 1995 she joined North Shore Horizons as a volunteer advocate, and later served as a board member until March 2008. In 1997 she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for her “outstanding commitment and service to North Shore Horizons”. Arlene was also a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Marvin, in 1992.

Arlene is also survived by her other children, John (Dory) Pearson, Betty (John) Wistrom, Mary (John) Turnquist, and Tim (Kathryn) Pearson all of Two Harbors, and Ken Pearson of Maplewood, Minn., grandchildren, Chrissy and Colleen Pearson, Curt (Pam) Wistrom, Becky Wistrom and Katie (Brian Gahsman) Wistrom, Mac and Jake Turnquist, Samantha and Kateisha Miller, Ashley (Dave Heber) Pearson, Shaine and Amber Pearson, Denay, Darcy, DeeJay and Delaney Pearson; great-grandchildren, Payton and Brycelynn Heber and Bailey Wistrom; sisters, Barb Beatty and Shirley (Mike) O’Connor; in-laws, Doris Tastula and Don (Jody) Pearson; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Sunrise Home for the excellent care and compassion shown to Arlene while she was living there.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 in Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial is at Lakeview Cemetery.

David L. Hylla, David L. Hylla, Proctor high school teacher and coach for 30 years, died unexpectedly Aug. 5, 2008 at his Proctor home. He was 58.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1949 to Roy and Rosemary Hylla in Holdingford, Minn., and was raised on the family farm. David was a 1967 graduate of Holdingford High School. He received his BA Degree from St. Cloud State in 1971 and his MA Degree from UWS.

David joined the Proctor school district in 1977 and taught Physical Education, Economics, Sociology and Anthropology. He took over as head football coach in 1981 and had a 195-77 record, including 22-2 the past two years, the most successful seasons in school history. He was planning on retiring at the end of the school year.

In addition to football, he also coached basketball and track. David’s many honors and awards from the Minnesota State High School Coaches Assn. included the George Haun Award, Hall of Fame Award and the MSHSCA Power of Influence Award. He was also named Coach of The Year several times and in 2006 was the Section 7 AAA Coach of The Year. He was a member and past president of the MN State High School Football Coaches Assn. He had attended Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gerry and infant daughter, Jennifer.

David is survived by his daughter, Ashley Hylla (fiance, Mike Bergum), Proctor; fiance, Gloria Karsky, North Branch, Minn.; brothers and sisters, Sharon (Russ) Hylla, Ronald (Cheri) Hylla, Mark (JoAnn) Hylla, Scott (Jennifer) Hylla; sister-in -law, Andrea Hylla, all of Holdingford, Minn., Kevin Hylla, St. Cloud and Michelle (Conrad) Eggan, Waconia, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, friends, students and players.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Egerdahl Football Field.

The burial was at St. Columbkille Cemetery, St. Wendel, Minn. Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the David Hylla Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the family, are preferred.
