Louise R. (Engman) Sather, Louise R. (Engman) Sather of Alborn, died Monday, July 5, 2004, in Alborn. She was 74.
She was born on May 14, 1930 in Twig to Joseph and Ruth (Spikberg) Engman. Louise was an Alborn resident for most of her life. She was a 1948 graduate of Proctor High School and worked at Wahl?s Department Store and Twin Ports Optical, both in Duluth and was Postmaster in Alborn, before becoming owner and operator of Louise?s Tavern of Alborn for nearly 20 years. She won the ?Great Hamburger Hunt? competition in 1981, after being runner-up in 1980 and was very proud of this accomplishment. She married Edwin Enlund in 1953, Peter Fosness in 1963 and V.O. Sather in 1988. Her favorite times were spent at her cabin on Aerie Lake, sitting around a campfire with family and friends. She was well known for her trademark smile and warm and welcoming personality. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, husband, V.O. Sather, a brother Joe ?Spud? Engman and special friend Doug Frye.
Survivors include her children Deb (Scott) Snickers of Alborn, Kerry (Linda) Enlund of Cloquet, Nadine (Wade) Hopkins of Saginaw and Rory Fosness of Alborn, stepchildren, Linda (Jerry) Urevig of Bovey and Jon (Barb) Sather of Duluth and their children and grandchildren, siblings Dorothy (Joe) Balcom of Ore., Fran Caster of Culver, Reggie Engman of Wash., Shirley (Joe) Tremblay of Alborn and Mary (George) Manthie of Wash., grandchildren Nathan (fiancee Alicia Beckstrom) Snickers, Jesse Enlund, Cara (Mike) Frank, Rachel (Sam) Willie, Lindsay and Joshua Enlund, Zachary, Hannah and Haley Richards and Mackenzie and Myrissa Hopkins, and great-grandchildren Mariah Willie, Nicholas Snickers, Caden Lane Frank, to be born in Sept., Reed Frank and Tyler Hoyt.
Private inurnment was in Spruce Hill Cemetery, Alborn.
Dawn Elizabeth Olafson, Dawn Elizabeth ?Doni? Olafson, who grew up in Munger and had been a Twig resident for most of her life, died peacefully of natural causes Sat., July 3, 2004, in her home. She was 44.
She was born in Duluth. She had been an employee of Maple Hill Meats for several years. Dawn was a very talented cook and enjoyed crafts, gardening, fishing, the outdoors and her cabin on Third Lake. She was certified to handle and cultivate rare flowers, licensed to handle wild falcons, was a licensed caterer and did home health care.
Dawn was preceded in death by her father Clifford Olafson and mother Doris Stromlund.
Survivors include daughters Kaila Scouton of Twig and Shannon (Jason) Deane of Anchorage, Alaska, grandson Kaden Jason Dean, sister Chris Olafson of Munger, brother Carl Olafson of Idaho, stepfather Clare Stromlund of Munger, stepbrother, Kurt Stromlund of Mich., nieces and nephews and very close friend Rolf Mattson of Saginaw.
A memorial service was held last week in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig. Pastor Larry Anderson officiated.
Walter L. Georgesen, Former Canosia Town Board Supervisor Russell (Mary) Georgesen of Goodyear, Ariz., is mourning the death of his father Walter L. Georgesen. The Duluth and Peoria, Ariz. resident died Sat., July 10, 2004, in Hope, N.D. while visiting his daughter. He was 95.
He was born in Duluth, graduated from Denfeld High School and attended Superior State. He married Maude Pigman on May 26, 1934, in Duluth. The couple made their home in Duluth, where Walter owned and operated Walter Georgesen Cash Supplies, serving small grocery stores and restaurants. Later he worked for St. Louis County, at Nopeming Nursing Home and at the Court House, retiring in 1974.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Maude in 1991 and by his sister Sigrid.
Survivors also include his daughter Fay (Clarence) Kainz of Ala., son David of Ind., sister Vivian Georgesen of Duluth and Ariz., five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Burial in Park Hill Cemetery.
Margaret Ann Swanson, Four brothers who live in the area, are mourning the death of their sister Margaret Ann ?June? Swanson. She died Tues., July 6, 2004, in her Duluth home. She was 65.
She was born in Duluth to Arthur and Hattie Hanson and had been a lifelong resident. She recently retired from Duluth Clinic as a records clerk after many years.
June is preceded in death by her parents, sister Gladys, and brothers Arnold, Glen, Robert and Bernard.
June is survived by sons Kevin of Bloomington and Keith (who passed away July 8, 2004) of Duluth, brothers Arthur Hanson of Proctor, Theodore Hanson of Cloquet, Lloyd Hanson of Saginaw, and Leonard Hanson of Brimson.
No services were held.
Evelyn Worner, Jarolyn (Bruce) Watkins of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Evelyn Worner. The Paynesville, Minn. resident died Sat., July 10, 2004, at the Paynesville Area Hospital. She was 84.
Evelyn was born on June 12, 1920, in Langola Township, Benton County, Minnesota, the daughter of Martin and Mathilda (Stodolka) Sauer. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.
She grew up in Royalton where she attended most of her schooling. She attended her senior year of high school in Jamestown, N.D., and continued her education at North Dakota State University where she received her four-year degree.
On April 1, 1943, Evelyn was united in marriage to Oliver Worner. They made their home in Paynesville and Willmar, where Evelyn worked as a teacher and homemaker. Together Evelyn and Oliver were able to share in 38 years of marriage before Oliver?s death on Sept. 18, 1981.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was active in the circle. She was also a member of Eastern Star.
She enjoyed bridge, knitting and flowers.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Oliver, three brothers and her parents.
She is also survived by another daughter Colleen (Bob) Norrgard of Evergreen, Colo., seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the 10:00 a.m. service on Sat., July 17 at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Rev. Ric Koehn will officiate. Burial will be in Wahpeton, N.D.
Lois L. Carlock, Lois L. Carlock, who was a 1956 graduate of Proctor High School, died Fri., July 2, 2004, in St. Luke?s Hospital. She was 66.
She was born in Duluth to Marvin and Gerda Johnson. Lois married Major Ralph L. Carlock in Madison Wis. She had worked as a flight attendant for North Central Airlines and as an LPN at the Duluth hospitals and several area nursing homes
She was preceded in death by her husband and her father.
Lois is survived by daughter Susan (Brant) DeBleck of Colo., son Jeffrey (Cynthia) Lynnwood of Wash., mother Gerda Johnson of Duluth, brothers Lloyd Johnson, Kenneth (Georgia) Johnson, both of Duluth and Gary (Mary Jo) Johnson of Colo. and granddaughters Marissa, Meghan and Kayla.
Burial was at Sunrise Memorial Park.
Gene M. Cary, Glenna Lee (Richard) Bennett of Proctor is mourning the death of her brother Gene ?Woodchuck? M. Cary. The Cloquet resident died Tues., July 13, 2004, in his home. He was 76.
Gene graduated from Cloquet High School in 1946. He was an Army Veteran serving during WW II with the 511th Parachute Regiment. After the war, he returned to Cloquet and worked at Northwest Paper Co. During the 1950s he worked for MP&L and also drove truck for Erickson Oil. He was a member of the VFW Post 3979 and a lifetime member of the Eagles where he was the president in 1978 and the secretary for many years.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Myrtle and son Glen.
He is also survived by a son Mike (Colleen Lawrence) Cary of Cloquet, four grandchildren, four nephews and his loving companion of 20 years Betty Ann and her four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was held in Cloquet with Military Honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
Glenn W. Schelin, Greg (Cherie) Schelin of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Glenn ?Shorty? W. Schelin. The Cloquet resident died Mon., July 19, 2004, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. He was 94.
He was born Oct. 6, 1909, in Alborn and was united in marriage to Ethel M. ?Bobby? Wiles on July 3, 1936, in Culver. Shorty was a lifelong area resident and worked as a plumber most of his life. He was a 55-year member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #11 and loved inventing things and building sawmills.
He is also survived by his wife Ethel M. ?Bobby?, another son, one daughter, his brother Ross (Norma) Schelin of Duluth, his sister Irene Schelin of Duluth, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Memorial Service on Fri., July 23, 2004, in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, followed by a reception in the fellowship room. Inurnment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park in Duluth.
Will Mattson Mackinaw, Barbara Mackinaw is mourning the death of her grandson, Will Mattson Mackinaw. A resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, he died Wed., July 14, 2004, at The Children?s Hospital in Denver, Colo., at the age of seven.
Will had just completed kindergarten and enjoyed drawing and creating stories, mushing dogs, fishing and playing with his brother.
He is survived by his loving parents Amy and Todd, a brother, paternal great-grandfather Harold Myers of Duluth, maternal grandparents Lois and Martin Mattson of Canyon, aunt and uncle Julie and Brad Mackinaw and cousins Seamus and Eamonn, all of Duluth, uncle Matthew Mattson of Santa Clara, Calif., Auntie Carol Serber of Chicago, Ill. and many friends and relatives from Alaska to Alabama.
A Celebration Of Will?s Life will be held today at 1 p.m. Thurs., July 22, 2004, in Chester Park United Methodist Church, 819 N. 18th Ave. E. Father Kent Drotar of Denver, Colo., will officiate.
Gladys E. Kleiman, Karen (Tom) Vanneste of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Gladys E. Kleiman of Mikana, Wis. She died Mon., July 19, 2004, at the Renville Co. Hospital in Olivia, Minn. She was 86.
The former Gladys VanGilder was born Sept. 13, 1917 at Etna Green, Ind. The family moved to Yarnell, Wis. where she graduated from Birchwood High School. In 1939 she married Harold Kleiman. They moved to Proctor, where she worked in a retail grocery store for 20 years. They then moved to Milwaukee where she worked for the school district. They retired to Mikana in 1979.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Harold Kleiman in 1995.
She is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a sister and three brothers.
