Ginnylee Olson-Appel, Services were held Tuesday for Ginnylee Olson-Appel of Twig. She died Thurs., July 14, 2005, in her home. She was 56.

Ginnylee was born in Duluth on Jan. 16, 1949 to Victor A. and Virginia M. (Berquist) Olson. Ginnylee was a sports enthusiast and had a great interest in Presidential history and listening to music, her favorite being Elvis. Ginnylee was a member of Twig Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Edward.

Surviving are a son George (Cindy) Olson of Duluth, a daughter, Georgianna Ness of Twig, grandchildren Brooke and Dakotah Ness, a sister Claudia Olson of Duluth and a brother Allan (Madeline) Olson of Portland, Ore.

Inurnment in the Grand Lake Cemetery.

Robert E. “Bob” Shrake, Ruth (Mark) Kolquist of Pike Lake is mourning the death of her father Robert E. “Bob” Shrake. The Hermantown resident died Sun., July 10, 2005 in Benedictine Health Center. He was 90.

He was born in Dennison, Ohio and was a Hermantown resident for 11 years. Bob married Maria A. Wehr in Karlsruhe, Germany. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, as a supervisor with the Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1963 as Captain. Following his military career, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 12 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors also include his wife Maria and grandchildren Amanda (Mike) McLeod of Duluth, Corporal Kasie Kolquist, U.S.M.C. of San Diego and Whitney Kolquist of Duluth.

Services were last week. Burial, with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard, will be in Sunrise Memorial Park.

If so desired, memorial contributions may be directed to the Benedictine Health Center Third Floor Post Acute Unit.

William C. French, Howard (Lorraine) French of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, William C. French. The Duluth resident died Sun., July 10, 2005 in St. Eligius Health Center. He was 76.

He was born in Atkinson, Minn. Bill was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He married Elma Lindemann Scott on Oct. 4, 1958. He worked for Minnesota Power for 24 years. He retired as an underground linesman for Nevada Power, Las Vegas, in 1985 and returned to Duluth. Bill was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 31 in Duluth and Local 396 in Nevada. He was a member of VFW Post 6320 and the Proctor Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Walter, Robert, Wesley and Donald.

He is also survived by his wife Elma, stepdaughters Donna (Gene) Schuldes of Wis., and Gale (Clem) Solarz and Vicki (Roger) Goode, both of Duluth, nine step-grandchildren, 15 step-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Service were held last week. Inurnment in Oneota Cemetery.

Violet Elizabeth “Vi” Stierns, Violet Elizabeth “Vi” Stierns, formerly of Bergstrom Junction Road, Saginaw, died Fri., July 15, 2005, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center, with her family by her side. She was 75.

She was born on July 22, 1929 in Superior, Wisc. to Frank C. and Cora A. (Schultz) Schmidt. Vi was a longtime Twig resident. She was a homemaker and had worked for seven years as a seamstress for North Shore Manufacturing Co. She married Lawrence Stierns on Nov. 6, 1954 in Superior. Vi was a 48-year member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, its women’s organizations, sang in it’s choir and taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a room mother at Caribou Lake School and was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout group craft instructor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence in 1979, brother Robert Schmidt and sister Adeline Schmidt.

Survivors include daughters Cory (Rick) Kay and Elizabeth (Jerry) Russell, both of Duluth, son Daniel (Sharon) Stierns of Cloquet, brother Don (Claudia) Schmidt of Arkansas, grandchildren Melinda Stierns, Sarah (Dennis) Muellner, Tabitha (Nick) Voltzke, Laura Kay, Michael (Kim) Russell and Jon Russell, and great-grandchildren Caleb and Elizabeth Muellner and Aiden Voltzke.

Services were Monday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, Rev. Marshall Moen officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Allen Edward Erickson, Allen Edward Erickson, formerly of Saginaw, died Sun., July 10, 2005, in St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice. He was 67.

He was born near Wrenshall to Helmer and Lorene (Bishop) Erickson on Jan. 20, 1938. Allen lived in Brook Park until the age of 9, and then lived in the Fairbault, Cambridge and Moose Lake State Hospitals. In the 1970’s, he moved to Whistling Pine boarding home near Saginaw and lived there for over 20 years. He spent his final years at the DRCC Triplex assisted living facility in Gary-New Duluth.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister Kathleen.

Allen is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law June and Lowell Rudd of Proctor and Jacqueline and Bill Beamish of Tonka Bay, Minn., nephews Craig (Kristin) Rudd of Proctor, Chris (Leslie) Rudd of Auburn, Maine, and Martin Beamish of Tonka Bay, five grand-nieces and nephews his uncle and aunt Verner and Mabel Erickson of Brook Park, numerous cousins, his friends at UDAC and the caring staff and residents at the DRCC Triplex in Duluth.

Services were held last week. Burial is in Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone.

Dorothy Ruth Peterson, Dorothy Ruth Peterson of Proctor and Duluth, died Fri., July 15, 2005, in Viewcrest Health Center. She was 84.

Dorothy was born in Proctor on May 1, 1921 to Henry and Minnie (Koprek) Voltzke. She was the first secretary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor. She worked at Target for 16 years. She was a member of the Pennel Park Residents Club, Senior Coalition and the Proctor Sewing Club. Dorothy loved crocheting afghans for her family and others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leslie W. in 1984, a son Terrance V. in 1982, and a brother Henry and sister Edith.

Surviving are sons Roger (Cheryl) of Phoenix, Ariz., Bruce A. (Kristina) of Duluth and Gerald H. (Marianne) of Spring Water, N.Y., daughters Marie A. (Greg) Jannetta of Greeley, Colo. and Janet K. (Bernard) Venier of Glencoe, Minn., 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Mary (Schlender) Lane, Services will be held today for Mary (Schlender) Lane of Duluth, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1941. She died Sun., July 17, 2005 after a long illness. She was 82.

Mary was born Aug. 20, 1922 in Duluth to Frank and Nora (Tobin) Schlender.

She grew up in Proctor. Following graduation from Proctor High School, she attended the St. Scholastica School of Nursing.

She married James “Jim” W. Lane at St. Rose Catholic Church on July 20, 1943. Jim and Mary lived on the East Coast, where Jim was stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard. When Jim was sent overseas, Mary moved back to Proctor and worked as a nurse for Dr. Dickson until Jim returned from his tour of duty in 1946. She served St. Michael’s Catholic Church as a member of the Ladies Circle. She volunteered her time at various charities and served the greater community as an election judge for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Nora Schlender, and her brother-in-law and his wife George and Margaret Lane.

She is survived by her husband James Sr., children James (Kathy) Lane, Jr. of Perham, Minn., Nora (Ronayne) Packingham of Duluth, Katie (Robert) Loch of St. Cloud, Richard (Sharon) Lane of Fargo, N.D. and Amy (Peter) Myers of Grand Rapids, her sister Janice (Jack) Ward of Proctor, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held today, (Thurs.) at 11 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church with visitation one hour prior to service. Memorials preferred to the Salvation Army. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.

Nancy Ann Shannon, Services were held yesterday for a 1972 Proctor High School graduate. Nancy Ann Shannon of Esko died peacefully in her home Mon., July 18, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 51.

She was born Nov. 13, 1953 to Harold and Elizabeth (Gibout) Aldridge in Duluth.

She married Steven Shannon in 1980. She worked in the Duluth area as a hairdresser and home health care assistant. She enjoyed working with the elderly, caring for children, camping and fishing. Her sense of humor and positive outlook on life during trying times proved to be an inspiration to all the lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Janet, her brother, Dean, and brother-in-law William Basilici.

She is survived by her husband, daughters Christy (Mark) Bruemmer of St. Cloud and Katie of Esko, her sister Patricia (Richard) Newton, brothers Barry (Alana) Aldridge, Timothy (Colleen) Aldridge, Matthew (Celeste) Aldridge and many nieces and nephews.

Lynette Rae “Lynne” Chandler-Larsen, Christian (Alyssa) West of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother Lynette Rae “Lynne” Chandler-Larsen. The Esko resident died Mon., July 18, 2005 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 52.

She was born March 23, 1953 in Chisholm. Lynne was a 1971 graduate of Chisholm High School and a 1974 graduate of Eveleth Area Vocational Technical School as a licensed practical nurse. Her nursing career included Chisholm Memorial Hospital, Cass Lake Hospital, Paynesville Community Hospital and North Kansas City Nursing Home. She moved to the Cloquet area in 1993, where she was a homemaker and lovingly doted on her 12 grandchildren. Lynne married Dave Larsen on May 18, 1999 in Las Vegas. She was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko and an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe-White Earth Reservation.

Lynne is also survived by her husband David of Esko, four other children Christopher Chandler and his fiancee Stacey Swaney of Independence, Mo., Jacob Kuntz of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kelly (Jodi) Larsen of Duluth and Erik (Jenny) Larsen of Cloquet, her mother Betty Burlingham of Cloquet, her father Arnold Quaal of Chisholm, siblings Judith (Dave) Anderson of Kansas City, Kan., and Ronald Quaal and Brenda Quaal, both of Cloquet, grandchildren Brandon, Joshua, Andrew, Max, Marcus, Jacob, Ethan, Emily, Kelsey, Kayla, Katelin and Isaiah, her mother-in-law Ellen Larsen of Esko, and many nieces, nephews and family members.

Visitation will continue today, Thurs., July 21, 2005 from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Apostolic Lutheran Church, Esko.

Loraine Lillian Alrick, Loraine Lillian Alrick, who graduated from Proctor High School, died peacefully Sat., July 16, 2005 at Edgewood Vista. She was 89.

She was born Sept. 22, 1915 to Ernest and Olivia Lanthier in Duluth. She graduated from Proctor High School. Loraine was a homemaker and worked at Fanny Farmer until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by husbands Fred Lawrence and Arnold Alrick, sisters Pearl and Ellen, and brothers Paul, James and Robert.

Loraine is survived by her daughters Susan Alrick (Mark Anderson) of Duluth and Barbara (Paul) Blegen of Laporte, grandchildren Kurt (Patty) Blegen and Corrie (Bill) Hackbarth, both of Duluth, great-grandchildren Benjamin Blegen and Isaak Hackbarth of Duluth, sisters Jean (John) Swensen of Gilbert, Evonne (Bill) Kangas of Makinen, Fay Johnson of Minneapolis and Pat Hanson of Amery, Wis., brother Swede of Moorcraft, Wyo., sisters-in-law Vicky Olson of Long Beach, Calif. and Louise Stenstrom of Tacoma, Wash., and several nieces and nephews.

Service at 1 p.m. Thurs., July 21, 2005 in Family of God Lutheran Church, 4097 Martin Rd. with Rev. Gary Guptill officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Internment will be at Park Hill Cemetery.

Alex Anderson, Services were held at Hermantown Community Church on Wednesday for young Alex Anderson, who was born October 6, 1994, was taken home to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, July 17, 2005.

He will be greatly missed by his loving parents, Danial and Stephanie Anderson; his loving foster parents, Dean and Cindy Turnquist; his maternal grandparents, Jerry and Carol Kalm; his paternal grandfather, Clarence Anderson; his foster siblings, Erica, Daniel, Ivy and Kiki; his special friend, Kaleb Johnson and many aunts, uncles, cousins and loved ones.

Alex was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Winifred Anderson.

Alex was a great son, a good student at Laura McArthur School and a great playmate. He loved biking, playing with legos, playing playstation and had a passion for wrestling.

Alex attended Sunday School at Hermantown Community Church and loved going to Vacation Bible School each year. We know Alex is now playing in his new heavenly home with the angels and resting in the arms of Jesus, his Savior.
