Frank Zemba, Services were held last week for Frank Zemba, a resident of Dairyland, WI died on Friday, June 24, 2005, at his home of natural causes. He was 88.

Frank was born on October 1, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minn., to John and Frances Ziemba. He was the youngest of seven children. He was a lifelong resident of Dairyland Township. He enjoyed many years of farming and family, then retired to his little cabin. He enjoyed talking about the good old days, all the hard work that went into clearing the land, harvesting crops, everything needed to survive in the early days. He was followed everywhere by his devoted pet, B.J. He will be sadly missed.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Anna Koszarek, Stella Graves, Rose Hughes and Nellie Erickson; two brothers, Stanley Zinmer and Walter Zembo, and a nephew James Zembo.

Frank is survived by great niece Cindy Jorgenson of Proctor along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will dearly miss him.

Burial will be at the Dairyland Township Cemetery.

Mark Kevin ‘Pops’ Thiry, Mark Kevin ‘Pops’ Thiry, who grew up in Twig and was a 1972 graduate of Proctor High School, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 4, 2005 in his home. He was 51.

The former Proctor resident, now of Cloquet, was born on June 13, 1954 in Duluth to Gailord and Dorothy (Skog) Thiry. He had been an employee of U.S.Steel’s Great Lakes Fleet, sailing on the Great Lakes, Duluth Ready Mix, Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway and Stora Enso. He was currently employed as a driver for Halvor Lines. He was a former member of the Proctor Moose Lodge. Mark loved spending quality time with family and friends and was fun loving and a light hearted joker. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Gailord; brother, Lee Thiry; and niece, Gaile Thiry.

He is survived by his children, Brett Thiry (fiancee, April McCammon), serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq, Hollie (Matthew) Walto and their daughter, Hannah, of Hibbing, and Kevin and Jennifer Thiry of Proctor; his mother, Dorothy Thiry of Hermantown; brother, Brian (Diane) Thiry and their children, Matthew and Aaron Thiry, all of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Ann Thiry of Duluth and her children, Eric (Angie) Thiry of Duluth and Martin (Chrissy) Thiry of Proctor; a great-niece; great-nephews; and his friend and former wife, Diane Thiry of Proctor.

Services were held last week in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor, Steven Elder officiating.

Eyvind G. Rathe, Eyvind G. Rathe, of Saginaw, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005. He was born Feb. 18, 1915 in Duluth to Johan and Maren (Store) Rathe. He was 90.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Nossum on Aug. 7, 1941 in Duluth. Eyvind worked as an telephone installer and repairman for the Pike Lake and Munger area; and retired in 1974 from Northwestern Bell as a telephone and P.B.X. system installer. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig, Telephone Pioneers, a 50 Year member of Euclid Masonic Lodge in Duluth, AAD Shrine Temple, Oddman Unit, Scottish Rite, and the Viking Shrine Club in Cloquet. Eyvind was also a former member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1274 in Cloquet and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1163 also of Cloquet.

Eyvind was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Signe; one brother, Arne; and one infant daughter.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, MaryAnn Gonyea of Vineland, N.J., and Kathleen (David) Erholtz of Duluth; one sister, Jenny Benkoski of Moose Lake; seven grandchildren, Anthony Erholtz, Seth Davis, Evan Davis, Michael (Stacy) Erholtz, Kelly (Denny) McGuire, Duff (Heather) Erholtz, and Daniel (Kim) Erholtz; 13 great-grandchildren, Grace, Matthew, Claire, Eleanor, Oliver, Cecelia, Emma, Finn, Beck, Bo, Bryce, Kaleigh, and Dawson Erholtz; three nieces, Janis (Donald) Carlson, Karen (Gerald) Ruona and Marlene (Walter) Anderson; and two nephews, Willard (Alice) Abrahamson and James Abrahamson.

Services were held in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig. Entombment in Park Hill Cemetery.

John C.V. ‘Jack’ Rowe, John C.V. ‘Jack’ Rowe, who attended Munger and Proctor schools and was an Assistant and Scout Master with Troop 130, in Saginaw for over 40 years, passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2005 with his loving wife at his side. He was 75.

He was born July 20, 1929, in Saginaw, Minn., to Oliver and Mary Ann (Dalton) Rowe.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. Jack retired from U.S.G. (formerly Wood Conversion), in Cloquet, after over 40 years of service. He loved camping and hunting rabbits with his hound dogs. Jack enjoyed riding his own horses in the mountains of Montana. He also took the Boy Scouts to Montana to camp and ride horses and on many occasions to Cliff Lake, Canada to camp and fish. Jack liked to work in his vegetable garden. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and helped with the church youth group for over 50 years. He was a member of the Guild of Metal Smiths in the Twin Cities and of Lake Superior Metal Smiths. He was a member of the Lakehead Harvest Reunion and worked with Habitat for Humanity.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; and two nephews, Jamie and Gary.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lois; a son, Johnnie Lee (Joan), of Hermantown; and a daughter, Sherry Ann (Eric) Schiller, of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Ethel Gaus, Saginaw, Elsie (Charles) Sieber, Saginaw and Elizabeth (John) Manisto of Cloquet; and close nephew, Stanley G. (Char) Copiskey; brother-in-law, Stanley M. Copiskey; cousins, J. Trevor (Brenda) Rowe of Plymouth, Devon, England, Dot Marshall of Newquary, Cornwall, England and Clair Windsor of Falmouth, Cornwall, England; many other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and exceptionally good friends.

A memorial service was held in First United Methodist Church.

Maynard C. Lawrence, Beatrice Poldoski of Proctor is saddened by the death of her brother, Maynard C. Lawrence. The Thomson resident died Monday, June 27, 2005 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was 82.

Maynard was born in Duluth to Frank and Mary (Gagne) Lawrence and served in the U.S. Army; and worked for Montgomery Ward, Minnesota Power and Light, U.S. Steel and then owned and operated Lawrence Appliance Repair for many years. He married LeMae Gran in Two Harbors in 1971; and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton.

Maynard is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, two sons, one sister, and four brothers.

He is also survived by his wife, LeMae; two sons, Robert (Deanna) of Cloquet and Larry (Danna) of Summerville, S.C.; two other sisters, Lorraine Bratloff of Cloquet; and Doris Lyons of Tenn.; one brother, Harry (Shirley) Lawrence of Cloquet; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held in St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. Interment at Old Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet.
