Janice N. Wandmaker, Janice N. Wandmaker, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1949, died Wed., May 24, 2006, in Sartell, Minn., after a brief illness. She was 74.

Janice Nethercott Wandmaker was born in Duluth, on Nov. 4, 1931 to Robert and Frances Nethercott. She married John Wandmaker, Jr., DDS on Aug. 6, 1955. Jan was past president and active in the National Standards Council of American Embroiderers and taught courses throughout the US and Canada. She was founder and first president of the Duluth Needle Arts Guild.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband John Wandmaker, Jr., DDS, significant friend David Morgenstern, son Richard, grandson Brett Engelbrektson, sister Corrine Ramlow, and parents Robert and Frances Nethercott.

She is survived by children Ann (Marc) Engelbrektson of Fargo, N.D., Fran (Bernie) Umerski of Sauk Rapids, John (Cheryl) Wandmaker Ill. of Andover, Diane (Joe) McDermott of Albuquerque, N.M., and Emily (John Delkoski) Wandmaker of Minneapolis, grandchildren Rebecca Blom (Richard), Kara and Erik Engelbrektson, Alex and Victoria Umerski, John IV, Sashya, and Michael Wandmaker, and Lauren McDermott.

Celebration of life 3-6 p.m., Mon., June 5 at her residence, 9900 Hudson Blvd., Duluth.

Marceline L. LaDuke, Marceline L. LaDuke of Saginaw died on Sat., May 27, 2006, peacefully at home, surrounded in love by family. She was 79.

Marceline was born on July 18, 1926, in Duluth to Duane and Celina (King) Lowe and had been a resident of the area for her lifetime. She worked for the General Cleaning Company, the Air Base until it closed, and had retired from the procurement office to the U.S. Forest Service after nine and one-half years of service. Marceline was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include sons Roger (Carol) LaDuke of Ashland, Wis. and Ricky (Donna) LaDuke of Saginaw, a brother Terry (Mae) Lowe of Proctor, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held today, Thurs., June 1 at 11 a.m. in the Hegstrom Family Funeral Home, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey Street, Duluth. Inurnment will follow at the Oneota Cemetery.

elores June (Becker) Crowe, Services were held Tuesday for Delores June (Becker) Crowe. The Vinland St. resident died Fri., June 2, 2006 in St. Luke’s Hospice, surrounded by her family. She was 69.

She was born on May 14, 1937 in Duluth to John and June (Fritz) Becker. Delores was a 1956 graduate of Denfeld High School and married Irni “Pete” Crowe in Covington, Ky. They had been married for over 25 years at the time of his death in 1988. Delores had worked as an accountant for Advanstar Communications for many years until her retirement in 2003. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, playing solitaire on her computer, cribbage, bowling, her cat Betsy, and was an avid NASCAR fan.

She was preceded in death by her father John, husband Pete, step-father Burton A. Olson and brothers-in-law Steve Hake and Nick Zime.

Survivors include her son Bill (Sue) Crowe of Duluth, daughter Michelle (Rick) Johnson of Proctor, mother June Olson of Duluth, grandchildren Laura, Allie and Devon Johnson, sisters Marlene Jezierski of Duluth and Bev Zime of Carlton, brother John (Susan) Becker of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will be in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials preferred.

Mary L. (Earls) Duray Maillis, Steven (Char) Reno is mourning the death of his mother, Mary L. (Earls) Duray Maillis. She died Fri., May 26, 2006 in Tarpon Springs, Fla. surrounded by her family. She was 73.

She was born in Duluth on August 12, 1932 and lived in the Duluth, Superior area until moving to Florida in 1976. At the time of her death, she operated a property management business. She was a life member of the Ladies Eagles Auxiliary and a member of First Baptist Church of Tarpon Springs. She enjoyed playing bingo, games, and cards.

She was preceded in death by her husband John C. Maillis, her son Robert J. Reno, her parents James, and Mabel Earls, brothers Ray, James, Clifford, and John, and sisters Irene Earls and Alena Dahl.

She is survived by another son Michael (Debbie) Reno of Hudson, Fla., daughter-in-law Gloria Reno of Hawthorne, Wis., six grandchildren, a sister Wanda (Michael) LeDoux of Duluth, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews

Services were May 31 in Florida, where she was laid to rest.

Walter Melvin Carlson, Walter Melvin Carlson, who was born in Munger and was the 1996 Solway Township Citizen of the Year, passed away Sun., May 28, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was 85.

He was born Dec. 26, 1920 to Charles and Ida (Carlson) Carlson. Walter married LeVina Anderson on Aug. 14, 1954. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for several area construction companies. Walter was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor, and was also a member of the Operating Engineers Local 49 Retirees and the Solway Seniors. He enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, and raised beautiful gladioli, raspberries and vegetables, which he generously shared with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Axel, Roy, Elmer and Herbert.

Walter is survived by wife LeVina, sister Alice Johnson of Cloquet, and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Services were held Fri., June 2. Burial in Solway Township Cemetery.

Dorothy G. Chernich, Floyd (Joyce) Balsness of Proctor is saddened by the death of his sister, Dorothy G. Chernich, The Eveleth resident, formerly of Cromwell and Hoyt Lakes, passed away Mon., May 29, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth. She was 85.

She was born Feb. 28, 1921 in Cromwell to Thomas and Hazel (Schmitt) Balsness and graduated from Cromwell High School in 1937. Dorothy was united in marriage to Rudolph Chernich on Sept. 14, 1957 in Carlton. After their marriage, they moved to the Virginia/Hoyt Lakes area.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rudy Chernich, a brother Bud, and her sisters Bernice, Betty, and Lila.

She is also survived by daughters Becky Ojanen (Jan Freschett) of Maplewood, and Lori Chernich of Virginia, two grandchildren, another brother George Balsness of Cromwell, and a sister Rose Zacher of Brainerd.

Inurnment services will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Cromwell.
