Roger Alexander Hoffman, Roger Alexander Hoffman of McCamus Road, Brookston, died peacefully on Sun., May 14, 2006 in St. Mary’s Inpatient Hospice unit. He was 61.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1945 in Brainerd to Alex and Mildred (Virnig) Hoffman. He was a Proctor resident for most of his life and was a 1963 graduate of Proctor High School. Roger was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Viet Nam War, being stationed in Germany. He was an employee of Qwest Communications, working as a network technician for his entire career, retiring in 1998. Roger enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, cribbage, golf, NASCAR, farming, skiing, bowling and all other outdoor activities.
He was preceded in death by his father Alex in 2005.
Survivors include his daughters Dana (Richard) Sexton and their daughter Ashley of Maple Grove, and
Melissa (Mike) Jasper and their children Logan and Dawson of Duluth, his special companion Jannette Baker of Brookston, his mother Mildred Hoffman of Duluth, brothers William “Dale” (Shirlene) Hoffman of Irving, Tx., Rev. Fr. Dennis H. Hoffman of Cross Lake, Ken A. Hoffman of Proctor, Daniel “Dan” P. (Kathleen) Hoffman of Rush City, and Alex D. Hoffman of Proctor, sisters Sharon Hoffman of Minneapolis, Judy Hoffman of Barnum, Diane Hoffman of Proctor and Sheila M. (Greg) Hughes of Wyoming, Minn., 18 nieces and nephews, nine great-nieces and nephews, and several aunts and cousins.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service today, Thursday, in Bell Brothers Chapel, Rev. Fr. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. today in Arrowhead Township Cemetery, Brookston, with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred.
Lorrain Lillian “Auntie La” Kari, Lorrain Lillian “Auntie La” Kari, 81, of Ugstad Junction Road, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 in St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Lorrain was born on August 3, 1924 to Anthony and Ellen Stauber in Duluth. She was a 1942 graduate of Central High School and worked for Western Union, Telephone Answering Bureau, Midway Oil, and First National Bank of Proctor. She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church, American Legion Lady Bugs, she enjoyed spending time knitting and sewing with her friends, they are known as “The Club”. Lorrain loved gardening, camping, bowling, bow hunting and canning vegetables. She never missed acknowledging a family member or a friend’s birthday with a card.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ahti; sister, Marguerite Snedker; brothers, Lawrence and Edward Stauber and two infant brothers.
She is survived by a daughter, Laurel (Terry) Sweeney of Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; three sons, Greg of Tucson, Ariz., Robert (Jean) of Duluth and Dick (Cookie) of Proctor; a sister, Betty Samec of St. Paul; three brothers, Anthony Stauber, Delano (Jean) Stauber and Ronald (Shirley) Stauber all of Duluth; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday in Forbes United Methodist Church. Burial in Park Hill Cemetery.
Helen E. Gundry, Gary (Marilyn) Gundry of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Helen E. Gundry, The former 46th Ave. West resident , died Wed., May 3, 2006 in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 91.
She was born on May 20, 1914 in Blaire, Wis. to Morris and Selma (Moen) Ericksmoen. Helen was a long-time Duluth resident, having lived in Detroit, Mich. from 1937-1940. She was a 1933 graduate of Denfeld H.S. and married Herbert D. Gundry in Duluth. They owned Gundry’s Grocery Store in Deerwood, Minn. Helen worked in Duluth at the Coolerator Company during World War II. She also worked at the Universal Atlas Cement Plant and Halvorson Trees. Helen was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Goodwill Auxiliary and the St. Louis County Extension Office Homemakers organization.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert D. in 1993, and her sister Jenny Mowbray.
Survivors also include her children Carol Johnson and LTC Raymond (Keiko) Gundry of MD, grandchildren Chad (Mary) Gundry, Jamie Gundry (Bryce Willett), Shawn Gundry (Jamie Heinecke), Nicole (Jordan) Dick, Thomas Johnson, Jessica Johnson (Jeremy Harris), and Kaito Gundry, and great-grandchildren Jacob Gundry and Mallorie Schwartz, a sister Thelma Nyquist, close friends, Amy Weidman, Al Norris and Paul Ryberg, and many nieces and nephews and their families who were very special to her.
Services were in Asbury United Methodist Church, Rev. Sharon Osborn officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.
Ellen Elvira Korpy, Ellen Elvira Korpy, who taught at Proctor from 1944-1946 died Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Virginia Convalescent Center in Virginia. She was 96.
Ellen was born in Winton, Minn. And was the valedictorian of the Class of 1929 from Roosevelt High School in Virginia. She was an English and German teacher who began her career in Meadowlands where she taught from 1931-1942. She retired in 1973.
Funeral services were Mon., May 15 in Virginia. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Linda Kinney, Linda Kinney died Mon., May 8, 2006 at St. Mary’s Hospital with her family and friends by her side. She was 58.
She graduated from Proctor High School in 1966, and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She was currently employed at ICO. Linda loved the outdoors and outdoor sports. She was a die-hard Green Bay Packer fan. Her greatest pleasures were sitting around a campfire with friends and family, and working in her pond gardens. Linda was a beautiful person inside and out, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father Leonard.
Linda is survived by her mother Lillian, little brother Leonard (Becky) Kinney, sisters Lenette (Rocco) Ierino and Lorrie (John) Parmeter, nephews and nieces David (Holly) Ierino, Allan (Susie) McDougall, Teresa and Jason Ierino, Jodi (Damien) Paulson, Michael (Katie) McDougall, and Krystal Kinney, great nephews and nieces Derek, Christian, Ella, and D. Matthew Ierino, Noah and Rocco Paulson, and Hunter and Logan McDougall, her dog Baby and bird Buddy.
Services were held Sun., May 14, 2006.
Dennis Lynn Eider, Laura Strumbell of Proctor is saddened by the death of her brother, Dennis Lynn Eider. He passed away Wed., May 10, 2006, at Chris Jensen at the age of 51.
He was born July 19, 1954, in Duluth, to Edwin and Mildred (Johnson) Eider. Dennis graduated from Denfeld High School in 1972. He worked as an LPN, a welder and a pipe fitter. He sailed for Great Lakes Fleet for six years and worked at Fraser Shipyards during the winter months, retiring is 2005 for health reasons.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gerald.
He is also survived by the love of his life, JoAnn, sisters Joyce (Bob) Ellingsen, Elaine Eider, Lisa (Tom) Morinville, all of Duluth, and Merry (Ken) Rotier, of Champlin, a brother John of Stillwater, sister-in-law Kathy Eider of Duluth, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Services were Monday in Duluth Gospel Tabernacle. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.
Ethel Irene (Strom) Kolden, Ethel Irene (Strom) Kolden, 85, lifelong resident of Proctor passed away January 8, 2006 at Viewcrest Health Center.
Burial will be Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 3251 Midway Road.
Gene E. Butrick, II, Gene E. Butrick, II, died Wed., May 10, 2006 in his Esko home, after his courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He was 37.
He was born October 19, 1968 in Hibbing to Gene and Rose (Scalise) Butrick. He graduated from Proctor High School.
Gene worked at Midway Sewer Service and was the Past Post Commander of the Proctor American Legion. He was a Seabee in the US Naval Reserves with the Mobile Construction Battalion 25 for over 18 years. He was deployed to the Middle East in 2003. One week before his second deployment he was diagnosed with cancer.
He married Tracey Monahan on December 10, 2005. He enjoyed watching the stock car races and camping, but his main enjoyment came from spending time with his friends and family.
Gene was preceded in death by his grandparents, Philip and Lillian Scalise and Lucille Butrick.
He is survived by his wife Tracey, his dog Lucie, parents Gene and Rose Butrick of Proctor, sisters Stacy (George) Haag of Alborn, Anissa (Mark) Wakefield of Corpus Christi, Texas, parents-in-law, William (Peggy) Monahan of Proctor, brothers-in-law, Todd Monahan of Cloquet, Kevin (Kelly) Monahan of Esko, Robert (Janelle) Monahan of Proctor, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Service was held Friday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.
Lloyd E. Nelson, Lloyd E. Nelson, who was born on January 18, 1917 in Proctor, died Tues., May 9, 2006, in the Hayward Nursing Home. He was 89.
Lloyd of Hayward, Wis., formerly of Edina, was the son of Edwin and Irene (Sundstrom) Nelson. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 until 1946 and married Geraldine Wood on August 2, 1947 in Minneapolis. Lloyd received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota and worked as an auditor for the REA in the Washington D. C. area before moving back to the Minneapolis area. He had been a member of the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Edina.
He was preceded in death by parents, wife, and sister Phyllis Blakey.
Lloyd is survived by nephews Vern Blakey of Superior and Ron Capshaw of New Bern, N.C., a niece Dorothy McLeod of Stone Lake, Wis., sisters-in-law Bea Capshaw of New Bern and Audrey Wood of Pleasanton, Calif., and cousins, great nieces, and nephews.
Services were held Sat., May 13 in the Stone Lake Wesleyan Church.
Elizabeth Yvonne Schultz, Elizabeth Yvonne Schultz, who was born in Proctor, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. She was 97.
Elizabeth was born to Frank & Clara (Renaud) Whelan on June 7, 1908. She married Frederick Robert Schultz in Detroit, Mich. in 1928. She was the Office Manager at the University of Illinois until her retirement in 1976. She had been an Ames resident for the past 11 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Dorothy Maurer; brother, Francis “Chap” Whelan.
She is survived by son: Robert Schultz, daughter: Carolyn Michels, both of Ames, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and sister Clarice Jeffrey of Albany, Georgia.
Services are today, Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Adams Funeral Home Burial is at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Stephen Paul Smith, Ann Marie (Walter) Wobig of Saginaw is mourning the death of her brother, Stephen Paul Smith. The Michigan resident succumbed to injuries suffered from a car-tractor accident on Mon., May 8, 2006. He was 44.
After graduating from Cedar Springs High School in 1980, he worked for CSX Transportation as a heavy machine operator, welder, foreman and inspector. Stephen was also a farmer and raised horses and beefalo. He attended Pilgrim Bible Church in Cedar Springs and also the Eagles in Sand Lake. Stephen is sharing with others by donating his organs so others could have a better life.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father-in-law and mother-in law, and a niece.
He is also survived by his wife Rose Marie, three children, father Charles Smith of Fountain, Mich., numerous other brothers and sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sat., May 13 at Pilgrim Bible Church, Cedar Springs, Mich.
