James O. Erkkila, James O. Erkkila of Proctor passed away on Sat., Apr. 15, 2006 as a result of an ATV accident in Alborn Township. He was 66.
James was born in Cloquet on April 26, 1939 to Oscar and Hilja (Aho) Erkkila. He graduated from Cloquet High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Air Force. He then worked for the government for 34 years as a Duluth Air Base Inspector and later as a Postal Worker. After retiring in 1995, he avoided the Minnesota chill by wintering with his wife in Texas. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, four-wheeling, and being a foster parent. He belonged to many groups including the Union Branch 114, NALC Union, NARF, AAPR, the Sportsmen Club and the American Legion. Always hardworking he co-owned Lorraine’s Hair Design with his wife and built both his house and cabin with his own hands. James will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, nephew Brian McGreevy, and nieces Tonya McGreevy and Donna Erkkila.
James is survived by his loving wife Lorraine, sons Jim (Tammy) and Jeff (Julie), grandchildren Adam, Melissa and Jami Erkkila and Eric, Jessica and Cody Makitalo, sisters Betty (Grant) Hansen and Kathy (Dave) Brunner, and sister-in-law Shirley Erkkila, as well as many relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held Wednesday.
Dorothy Marie Waldhoff, Dorothy Marie Waldhoff, 86, of Duluth died Sat., Apr., 15 2006 in Franciscan Health Center.
She was born November 15, 1919 in Ortonville to LeRoy and Edith (Trebil) Kenyon. Dorothy worked part-time as a clerk, flower gardener and home cleaning, but was primarily a homemaker. She enjoyed camping, cribbage, travel, fishing, gardening, cooking and bowling. Dorothy was a long time charter member of the Rice Lake Volunteer Firefighters Women’s Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and brothers Lyle, Irving and Laverne.
Dorothy is survived by her son James of Gilbert, Ariz., daughters Roberta (Walter) Kephart of Duluth and Helen (Dwight) Kammerzell of San Antonio, Tx., seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and sisters, Marils Carey of Moose Lake, Bernice Devich of Duluth and Loraine (Al) Laederich of California.
Dorothy’s family thanks the staff of the Franciscan Health Center for their services, support and loving care of Dorothy.
Memorial service will be Fri., Apr. 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Forbes United Methodist Church, 33 Grove St., Proctor with Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Forbes United Methodist Church or Franciscan Health Center.
Frank Calgero Vittorio, Anthony (Gladys) Vittorio of Saginaw is saddened by the death of his brother Frank Calgero Vittorio. The Duluth resident died Mon., Apr. 10, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was 89.
He was born on June 16, 1916 to Anthony and Josephine (Caccamise) Vittorio, in Rochester, N.Y. He was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Frank had worked as a crane operator for U.S. Steel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Anthony, brothers Eddie and Thomas “Babe”, sisters Irene Williams and Alice Earehart.
He is also survived by sisters Ethel Vittorio and Janet (Michael) Vittorio Corica, both of Duluth, and over 50 nieces and nephews including Scott Fredrickson, Stacey Fredrickson, Taylor Fredrickson, Ruth Vittorio, Gary Vittorio, and Rebecca King.
A funeral service was conducted last week. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Charolette Anne Verville, Charolette Anne Verville, whose husband Capt. James L. Verville along with Capt. Sherman L. Gonyea died when their F-101 Voodoo jet crashed 35 years ago, died peacefully on Sat., Apr. 15, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice with her family at her side. She was 64.
She was born Aug. 11, 1941 in Morris, Minn., to Floyd Harold and Joyce Esther (Woolsey) Kragh. Char was a graduate of Cass Lake High School. She married James Lawrence Verville and she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband James on Dec. 17, 1971.
Survivors include her sons Scott (Kristin) of Eau Claire, Wis., Jeff (Sarah) of St. Louis, Mo., and Kurt (Ava) of Duluth, her parents Floyd and Joyce Kragh of Farmington, sister Carolyn (Doug) Kliewer of Duluth, brother David Kragh of Greensboro, N.C., and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday until the 1 p.m. funeral service in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Margaret Agnes Riley, Margaret Agnes Riley, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School, died Tues., Apr. 11, 2006 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 89.
The Kenwood Avenue resident, formerly of E. Niagara Street, was born in Proctor on Feb. 8, 1917 to Mose Joseph and Marie (Sauter) Riley. She had worked for Northwestern Bell as an operator. She was a member of The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, sister Helen in childhood, sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Ray Roehl, and her sister Gertrude E. Riley on March 16, 2006.
Margaret is survived by her sister Mildred Josephine Riley of Hermantown, brother Raymond J. (Pat) Riley of Virginia, and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial in the Benedictine Health Center Chapel was held Monday. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Lorraine A. Therrien, Lorraine A. Therrien, who grew up in Twig, was a graduate of Proctor High School and had been active in organizing class reunions, passed away Sat., Apr. 15, 2006 at Bayshore Health Center. She was 82.
The former Exeter St. resident was born on Aug. 10, 1923 in Duluth to Harry and Edith (Nelson) Anderson. As a career, she was a long time secretary for Arrowhead Electric Company of Duluth. She was a member of New Life Covenant Church, Twig. After retirement, Lorraine enjoyed traveling, going out to dinner and visiting Johnson’s Bakery in Duluth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Clifford “Bud” Anderson, sister-in-law Joanne Anderson, brother-in-law Alvin Pekkarinen, and dear friend Bob O’Rourke.
Survivors include her son Brad (Diane) Therrien of Brooklyn Park, grandchildren Spike and Sparky Therrien, sister Gladys Pekkarinen of Markham, Minn., and several nieces and nephews.
Services were Wednesday in New Life Covenant Church, Twig, Pastor Bradley Shannon officiating. Burial at Grand Lake Cemetery.
René Clarence Bijold, Brian (Jeanet) Bijold of Proctor is mourning the death of his brother René Clarence Bijold. The Marcell resident died Sun., Mar. 19, 2006 at Bigfork Valley Hospital. He was 63.
René was born Oct. 15, 1942 in Duluth to Clarence and Adeline (Anderson) Bijold. He grew up and attended schools in Proctor, where he graduated in 1960. René was a conductor on the railroad for 38 years while living in Minneapolis. He married Michelle Anne Muzzy on April 12, 1996 in New Brighton. René enjoyed reading, biking, skiing, fishing, the outdoors, traveling and many other interests too numerous to name.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Christopher in 1991.
He is also survived by his wife Michelle, daughter Genevieve, sister Lonnie (Michael) Cole of Wisc., Judy (Rodney) Gordon, father-in-law Craig (Dorothy) Muzzy, brothers-in-law Mike (Marie) Muzzy, Denny Painter and Scott Muzzy, sister-in law Emily Gordon, nieces and nephews Raquel, Andre, Michele, Brian, Rebecca, and Shylo, and many more family and friends.
Lars C. Engen, Services will be held today (Thursday) for Lars C. Engen. The Martin Rd. resident died Sun., Apr. 16, 2006 as a result of an ATV accident. He was 44.
He was born in Duluth on Nov. 2, 1961 to Robert and Mary Engen. Lars was a 1980 graduate of Hermantown High School. He had been a truck driver for Miners, Inc., for 19 years, but had been with the company since age 18. Lars was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father.
Lars is survived by his wife of 22 years Elaine, daughters Christine, Samantha and Tayler, all at home, brothers Richard of Detroit, Mich. and Steven of Duluth, sisters Mary Sandeger of Arizona, Carol Engen of Meadowlands and Donna Nelson of Cotton, mother Mary of Duluth, and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church.
Alpha (A.) Betty Slattengren, Alpha (A.) Betty Slattengren, a former Proctor resident and a teacher at Jedlicka Junior High School from which she retired after 21 years, died Wed., Apr. 19, 2006 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 88.
The Duluth resident was born on March 29, 1918 to Ernest and Minnie (Nelson) Evanson in Duluth. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1935. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Duluth State Teacher’s College and a Master’s degree from U.M.D. Before marrying LeRoy W. Slattengren in 1943, she was a teacher in Taylor’s Falls and North Mankato, Minn. During World War II, she was a civilian employee as a cryptographer with the Army Signal Intelligence in Washington D.C. After the war, Betty and LeRoy raised their six children on a dairy farm near Taylor’s Falls. Later, they moved to Proctor where Betty was a teacher at Jedlicka Junior High School. Betty was a life member of local, state and national education organizations. She was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor, where she served as choir director, organist, Sunday school superintendent and A.L.C.W. President. She served on district youth and parish education boards and was president of the Lake Superior Conference Women in the former American Lutheran Church. Later, she served on the nominating committee of the N.E. Synod of the E.L.C.A. and the women’s board of the synod. Music was an important part of her life. Through the years, she was a vocal soloist, director of church choirs and civic choruses and an organist. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She served on advisory boards for RSVP and Lutheran Social Services. Being a homemaker for her family was always her priority.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Robert and Donald Evanson and her sister Marion Nelson, her husband LeRoy, and her son Paul.
She is survived by her children David (Sonya) of Brooklyn Center, Minn, John (Joan), Roger, Tom (Marilyn), Karen (Douglas) Vandenberg. all of Duluth, 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Kathryn Evanson and Nancy Mismash, as well as many other relatives.
Services were held Monday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Rev Charles Henneman officiating. Entombment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor would be appreciated.
Carol Ann Archambeau, Carol Ann Archambeau of Hermantown died Wed., Apr. 19, 2006, in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 66.
Carol was born in Brule, Wis. and graduated from the North Western High School in Poplar, Wis. She and Jim Archambeau were married in Superior in 1958. Carol was a homemaker and a housekeeper for private families. She loved and enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren. She loved to grow flowers in her garden, watch and feed the birds, and enjoy outdoor activities including camping.
Carol was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Aholm, and brothers Eugene, Howard, and Leslie Johnson.
Carol is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Cheri (John) Berglin of Munger, a son Scott of Hermantown, grandchildren Jason and Melanie Berglin and Rochelle and Marie Archambeau, a great-granddaughter Isabella Rose, sisters Evelyn (Bill) Culhane of Brule, Deloris Korhornen and June Johnson of So. Superior, and a brother Melvin (Mary Ann) Johnson of Superior.
Services were Monday in Salem Lutheran Church. Burial in the Hermantown Cemetery.
James D. “Wayside” Voltzke, Sr., James D. “Wayside” Voltzke, Sr., who attended Proctor and Hermantown Schools where he still holds the Broad Jump record, died Mon., Apr. 17, 2006 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 62.
The Oliver, Wis. resident was born on July 12, 1943 to James Hall and Dorothy Johnson in Duluth. Jim was a truck driver for over 40 years, and drove for Jeno’s, Zalk Josephs, Midwest Drivers and retired from Monson Trucking in 2000, after 19 years of service, along with numerous Safety Awards. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 346 and the American Fishing Club.
He was preceded in death by his father James K. Hall, Sr., a brother James K. Hall, Jr., and stepfathers Ardell Voltzke and Robert Johnson.
He is survived by his mother Dorothy Johnson of Duluth, his wife of 31 years Jacquelyn “Jackie”, a son James (Tricia) Voltzke, Jr. of Superior, daughters Lisa (Scott) Waters of Duluth, Lauri (Rick Deppe) Davey and Tammy (Jeff) Rolson, both of Superior, Susan (Conrad) Hansen of Forest Lake, and Carolyn (Don) Hansen of Moundsview, sisters Linda (Hall) (Warren) Anderson of Walker, Jan (Hall) Peterson of Walker, Doretta (Hall) O’Brien of Oak Park, Minn., and Susan (Steve) Salgy of Wrenshall, brothers Richard (Jean) Voltzke of Duluth and Robert Johnson of Cathedral City, Calif., sisters-in-law Marie Bonneville (Rich James) of Cloquet and Barbara Engberg of Proctor, brother-in-law Larry (Char) Geleneau of New York Mills, Minn.; grandchildren Teddy, Shauna and Corey Davey, Brittany and Conrad Hansen, Ashley and Rhiannon Rolson, Leah and Jacob Waters, Ethan and Thea Voltzke, and a grandchild due in September, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jane Marie (Goulet) Emsley, Jane Marie (Goulet) Emsley, 87, formerly of 4th St., Proctor, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 with her family at her bedside. She was a resident of Benedictine Health Center for the past 3 years.
Jane was born August 27, 1918 in Coleraine, Minn. and graduated from Greenway High School in 1937. She married Raymond Joseph Emsley on December 29, 1937 and moved to Proctor where she raised her family. Jane was a member of St Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. She worked for St. Luke’s housekeeping, the American Cancer Society, and the Foster Grandparent Program in the Duluth School District.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond, son, Robert David, daughters, Mary Jo Johnson and Mary Patricia Slatter, daughter-in-law, Joyce Emsley and brothers, Francis and Patrick Goulet.
Jane is survived by her children, Jerry (Deanna) Emsley of Oklahoma, Bernadette (Richard) Johnson of Duluth, Annette Foucault of Proctor, Annie (Dale) Kolenda of Hermantown, Kathy (George) Leon of Calif, Mark Emsley of Missouri, Renee Rautell of Proctor, and Bill Raunio of Superior; two brothers, two sisters, 32 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one on the way; a special friend, Merlyn Kruger of Duluth.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday from 2 until the 3 p.m. mass of Christian burial in the Benedictine Health Center Chapel. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Mildred “Millie” Holmstrom, Ardelle (Terry) Raycraft of Bayview is mourning the death of her mother, Mildred “Millie” Holmstrom. The Two Harbors resident died Wed., Apr. 19, 2006 at the Lake View Home. She was 93.
She was born Dec. 10, 1912 to Marius and Christine (Carlson) Larson in Two Harbors, where she grew up and attended schools. She married Randolph Holmstrom in 1932 and they made their home in Duluth from 1934 until returning to Two Harbors in 1952. While living in Duluth, Millie was employed at Nelson Knitting Mills and Western Electric. Music was a big part of her life. She taught piano and organ in her home, and in the homes of local Schmitt Music customers. She and Randy played at the Teen Center and with local dance bands, and she continued to play piano in the nursing home until her death. Millie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Moose Lodge Drill Team. She loved playing Bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Randolph, stepmother Ingeborg Larson, sister Grace Costley, and brothers Milton and Richard Larson.
Millie is also survived by her son Loren (Barbara) Holmstrom of Maplewood, grandchildren Kevin (Kathy) Raycraft, Tim and Mary Raycraft, Kathleen (Michael) DeBaiso, Mark and Jason Holmstrom, and great-grandchildren Aaron, Kelly and Bobby.
Services were Saturday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery.
