James William “Jim” Anderson, James William “Jim” Anderson of Old Hwy. 53, Saginaw, died Sun., Apr. 2, 2006, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was 45.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1961 in Duluth to Ray and Diane (Pentilla) Anderson. He was a lifelong Island Lake and Saginaw resident. Jim was a graduate of Central High School. He married Wendy Oakland on July 12, 1986 at her parents home in Twig. He was the owner and operator of his own business, Anderson Auto Body, for many years. He was a current employee of Lakehead Constructors, Inc. Jim was a member of the National Federation of Independent Business and the Painters Union. His greatest joy was family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, drawing and had a

great appreciation of all types of music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Dennis Anderson, mother-in law Marilyn Oakland, and sister-in-law Reenie Olson.

Survivors include his wife Wendy, children Carl, Danielle, Mari and Samantha Anderson, all at home, granddaughter Izabella, sisters Barbara (Palmer) Holzer of Blaine and Sharon (Jim) Thoren of Duluth, father-in-law Loren Oakland of Twig, brother-in-law Craig (Rita) Oakland of Twig, sister-in-law Cindy (Joe) Brown of Duluth, grandfather-in-law Alfred Oakland of Twig, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today, Thursday, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, Pastor Christopher Wheatley officiating.

Gloria B. Tuttle, Gloria B. Tuttle, who was a Proctor High School graduate, died Wed., Mar. 29, 2006 in Bayshore Health Center. She was 75.

The Hermantown resident was born in Duluth on Nov. 11, 1930 to Francis and Katherine Burke. She worked for Marshall Wells in the buying department. Gloria married Edwin Tuttle on March 31, 1952 in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Edwin Jr., a daughter Patricia Mork, and a brother Eugene Burke.

Gloria is survived by her husband Edwin, daughters Kathryn (Mark) Severson and Laurie (Dale) Paszak, both of Duluth, grandchildren Christopher, Dawn, Gloria, Jessica, Nathan, Amy, Eric, and Donny, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Fr. James Crossman officiated at the service. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Paul Stephen Slattengren, Paul Stephen Slattengren of Duluth passed away Thurs., Mar. 30, 2006, in Miller Dwan Medical Center. He was 59.

Paul was born on April 8, 1946 in St. Croix Falls, Wis., to LeRoy and Betty Slattengren. Paul was a 1964 graduate of Proctor High School and attended the University of Minnesota and UMD. He retired as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was an Eagle Scout and loved outdoor life, especially hunting and fishing. His hobbies were writing poetry, playing his guitar and wood burning art. His wit made him a friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father LeRoy.

Surviving are his mother Betty, brothers David (Sonya) of Brooklyn Center, John (Joan), Roger and Thomas (Marilyn), all of Duluth, a sister Karen (Douglas) Vandenberg of Duluth, and many nieces and nephews and extended family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Miller Dwan and its dialysis unit for their excellent care.

Service was held Sun., April 2, 2006.

Barbara Mae (Slosson) Chantelois, Barbara Mae (Slosson) Chantelois went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tues., Mar. 28, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83.

She was born April 23, 1922, in Superior, Wis., to Lanson and Sophia Slosson. Barbara was a graduate of Proctor High School. On May 6, 1943, she married Glen Chantelois. She was a longtime, active member of Apostolic Gospel Church. Barbara was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Carol Angela Slosson, and a brother Sonny Slosson.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Glen, daughters Nina Marie (Thomas) Bijold and Billie Jean (Robert) Koski, all of Proctor, grandchildren Gwendolyn Bijold, Michael (Lisa) Bijold, Rebecca (Marcus) Ward, and Todd (Sue) Koski, great-grandchildren Kyle, Madison, Amanda, Paige, Alex, Jacob, Dakota, Dustyn, Mike, and Dan, a brother Richard (Jean) Slosson of White Bear Lake, a sister June (Richard) Nowak of Colo., and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff of St. Mary’s Medical Center ER and the Oncology Unit, also to Dr. Lynn MacLean, Dr. Jones, Dr. Christian, and Dr. Savage.

Services were held at Apostolic Gospel Church. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Carol Louise (Sonnenburg) Emberg, Carol Louise (Sonnenburg) Emberg of Lindahl Road in Proctor died Sat., Apr. 1, 2006 at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 79.

She was born on March 9, 1927 to Edward and Ruth Sonnenburg in Duluth. She was a lifelong Duluth/Proctor resident and a 1945 graduate of Denfeld High School. She married Clifford “Bud” Emberg on October 28, 1948 in Proctor. Carol retired in 1976 from the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she was a telephone operator. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 106 in Proctor, and the Telephone Pioneers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Edward “Bud” Sonnenburg, and a granddaughter Becky Johnson.

She is survived by her husband Bud, children Jan and David McLeod of Proctor, Nancy and Jack Eilefson of Proctor, Robert and Linda Emberg of Oregon, and Thomas and Jan Emberg of Saginaw, a sister and brother-in-law Susan and Donald Farrell and their children Kristin, Tom and Joe, grandchildren Cliff, Theresa, Katie, Emily, Maggie, Michael and Sarah, great-grandchildren Aaron, Lexi, Marty, Alex, Bosten, Brysen and Simon, and many nieces and nephews. Carol’s family would like to thank Middle River for their loving care and compassion.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service today, Thurs., Apr. 6, 2006 in Immanuel Lutheran Church. 614 Second St., Proctor. The Rev. Mark A. Osthus officiating.

John D. Dahl, William “Scotty” (Marge) Dahl of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, John D. Dahl. The Duluth resident died Fri., Mar. 31, 2006 at the Benedictine Health Center. He was 84

He was born in Duluth. John was a graduate of Denfeld High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Coast Guard-Merchant Marine in the Atlantic and Mediterranean War Zones. He married Gladys Nelson in Duluth on Sept. 12, 1953. For a number of years, the couple owned and operated Seaway City Transfer. John also worked as a truck driver for City Wide Delivery and Russell Creamery, and was a Calibrator with Standard Oil. John played semi-pro hockey in Seattle. He was also one of the first youth hockey coaches at Merritt Park. John also played baseball and softball in the city leagues. He was a member of the VFW.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, who died in Oct. 2005.

He is also survived by his daughters Wendy (Tom) Rectenwald of Duluth, Sandy (Pat) Stone of St. Louis Park and Sue (Jack) Brocious of Ill., a sister Lorraine Strom of Duluth, and grandchildren Dana, Michael, Stephen, Thomas, John, Ellyn and Sarah.

Services were held at First United Methodist Church, Duluth. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Charles William Dart, Charles William Dart, who was born Feb. 5, 1922 in Proctor, passed away Mon., Mar. 20, 2006 in Manley Hot Springs, Alaska. He was 84.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Chuck applied to the War Manpower Board to work on the Alaska Highway. He also worked in a refinery in Whitehorse and then in Amchitka. After the war, Chuck attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he met Gladys Reed. They were married Sept. 8, 1950, in Tok. The couple finished their college education at Chico State. in 1955 they returned to Fairbanks with their three children and Gladys took a teaching job. Shortly afterward the Darts purchased the hot springs in Manley Hot Springs where they have lived ever since. Chuck helped Gladys reopen a school there in 1958. He provided the janitorial and maintenance services in the small log cabin and refueled the Coleman lanterns for light and organized the Blazo boxes used for students’ desks. The second school was held in the “plastic” house that Chuck built and heated with water from the hot springs. He served as a delegate to the Democratic Party in the 1960s. His strong advocacy for equal rights, education, union issues, Native claims, rural and community issues continued throughout his lifetime. Chuck loved to travel and take photographs. His favorite interest was the time he spent in Kaktovik with a friend photographing polar bears. He was just as passionate about the land around him. The Hot Springs Greenhouses yielded the finest tomatoes in the state. Chuck and his sons had gold claims in the Tofty area. He was an integral part of the Hot Springs community, he will be missed “indeed.”

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack and also by his brother Robert L. Dart, who died on the same day (March 20) in 1982, a sister Harriet, and his daughter and son-in-law Diane and Dan Atkins.

He is survived by his wife Gladys, sons and daughter-in-law John Dart and Jim and Liza Dart of Alaska, granddaughters Corinna and Ilona, sister-in-law Gloria Dart of Proctor, and many other family members and friends.

Lynn John Miernicki, Keith Miernicki of Saginaw is mourning the death of his brother Lynn John Miernicki of Kent, Wash. He died Tues., Mar. 28, 2006 in his home. He was 67.

Lynn was born in Duluth and grew up in the Lincoln Park area. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1958. He moved from Duluth to Colo. and later returned to Duluth. He recently moved to Wash. to be near his children. Lynn was manager of Highland Supper Club, owner of the Bratwurst House, and was a sales representative for a heavy equipment firm and roofing materials firm.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lynn is also survived by his wife Peggy White, four children, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchildren, and two other brothers.

James (Jim) Edward Liston, James (Jim) Edward Liston of Pike Lake died peacefully in Yuma, Ariz. on Wed., Mar. 29, 2006. He was 78.

Jim was born in Duluth on April 29, 1928. He was raised in West Duluth and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1946. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

Jim is survived by his wife Pauline, children Sue Doyle, Patty (Ted) Frase, James (Sandy) Liston, Jr., grandchildren Robby Dock, Cassie Gronlund, Christine Smity, Jeffrey Dock, Adam Frase, Marie Liston, Ian Frase, David Liston, and great-grandchildren Sarah Gronlund, Hallie Gronlund, Barrett Smith, Elizabeth Frase, Bailey Smith, boy Dock.
