Charles Edward Gilderman, Charles Edward Gilderman, a lifelong Proctorite, who served as a Proctor policeman and volunteer fireman earning the title of Assistant Chief, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, March 27, 2009 at St. Eligius Health Center. He was 78.
Gilderman was chief claims agent for the DM&IR, ending his career in 1982. He was also instrumental in the Proctor Area Winter Carnival.
Charles was born at the family home in Proctor on Oct 12, 1930, the youngest of three children of Arthur and Ethel (Gibson) Gilderman.
Chuck grew up during the depression. He was very involved in athletics at Proctor High School, participating in basketball, baseball, track and his favorite, football. After high school he played pulling guard for the Duluth Junior College football team. One of his proudest moments was playing in the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
He started to work for the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway in 1948. He served his country honorably by serving stateside with the Army Air Force National Guard during the Korean War working as a cook and Military Policeman. After his time in the service he rejoined the railroad, filling many positions in the safety and claims department
He married the love of his life, Joan Foucault Malmstein on Oct. 7, 1950 in Proctor. Raising seven children was a team effort. While Joan took care of the home front, Chuck worked up to 3 or 4 jobs to provide his family with necessities and opportunities like sports and other activities.
Chuck believed in community, helping to build the Proctor Little League field and raise funds for the new Proctor Arena. As his seven children grew, he coached them in hockey, baseball and many other sports. When he wasn’t coaching, he was yelling from the stands. Chuck encouraged his kids to get involved and to work hard. He set high expectations for himself and for his kids. His legacy as a father is in passing on his belief in integrity and hard work to all of his children. He loved spending time with his many grandkids and great grandkids.
Chuck loved to hunt, fish, play harmonica, golf and listen to Mike play the accordion. He really enjoyed spending his time at the “cabin” on Lake Nichols and wintering in El Jobean, Florida.
Charles was a lifelong member of Forbes United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302, Elks, and the All American Club.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Penny Gilderman; granddaughter, Annie Gilderman; and a nephew, Robert “Bobby” Gilderman.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan; seven children, Charles “Chuck” (Candy), Dan (Sunny), Kerry (Kathy), Diane (Dave) Bell, Brian (Patsy), Jill Gilderman and Glen (Terrie); 17 grandchildren, Amy, Kory, Gina, Sarah, Mathew, Angela, Bailey, Jon, Adam, Ryan, Amber, Amanda, Cody, Nichole, Allison, Katie and Boston; 15 great-grandchildren; two siblings, a brother, Arthur (Lillian) Gilderman of Cloquet and sister, Marilyn Ustica of Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Eligius Health Center and St. Mary’s Hospice Team for the care and compassion shown to Charles and the Gilderman family.
A funeral service was held Mon., March 30 in Forbes United Methodist Church, Rev. Pamela Barbour officiating. Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
Scyril Phillip Sizer, Scyril Phillip Sizer, who moved to Proctor in 1968, passed away on March 25, 2009 at the Veteran’s Nursing Home in Silver Bay, Minn. He was 87.
Scyril Phillip Sizer was born on Aug. 18, 1921, in Eagle Bend, Minn., to the late Luke and Angela Sizer. He was raised in Osakis, Minn.
He married Betty Lou Hansen on Nov. 5, 1945, in St. Paul. Scy had a variety of jobs but worked for General Electric for over 25 years and retired from the Mountain Iron office in 1986. He received awards for inventing better/more efficient ways to repair big motors/machines. He and Betty ventured into owning and operating a small general store in Buyck, Minn., from 1964 to 1968 at which time they sold the store and home. After their youngest daughter graduated from Proctor high school they moved back to the Iron Range where they both continued to work and finally retire. Due to his illness they moved to Hermantown in 1992 to be closer to family.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Portland. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and was on one of the two ships at sea that fatal day, Dec. 7, 1941. He was proud to be an American and serve his Country. He loved the outdoors, gardening, camping with his family, hunting and fishing, and just being in the woods with the dogs and family. Many a tall tale was told!
Scy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Glenn, and Don; sisters, Irene Collins, Rachel (Peggy) Castle, and Edith Tschample.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Sizer, Hermantown.; children, Larry (Bonnie) Sizer of Maple Grove, Zillah (Darrel) Smith of Stewartville, Minn., Levere (Sun) Sizer, of Aloha, Ore., Jeanne (Norm) Ruth of Hermantown; grandchildren, Christine Lovell, Kerry (Tom) Brewer, Conrad (Jen) Sizer, Ryan (Andrea) Ruth, and Kevin Sizer; great-grandchildren, Nic Weisjhan, Raina and Hannah Brewer, and Alex Ruth; brother, George Sizer; sisters, lona Anderson, Lucille Vanderwerf; and many nieces and nephews.
A service was held Saturday in St. Lawrence Church. Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard following. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Park.
Edward Raymond “Ed” Foucault, Edward Raymond “Ed” Foucault died accidentally Sunday, March 29, 2009 at his Solway Township home. He was 39.
He was born on Oct. 14, 1969 in Duluth to Floyd E.A. and Annette (Emsley) Foucault. Ed grew up in Twig and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1988 graduate of Proctor High School and attended the Duluth Area Vocational Technical College, where he studied diesel mechanics. He later became certified by the State of Minnesota as a septic mound system installer. Ed was owner and operator of Ed Foucault Trucking. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed his hobby farm home, his farm animals, guns and especially his beloved dogs, Jack and Sammy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd E.A. Foucault.
Ed is survived by his beloved companion of many years, Lori and her sons, Travis and Sylvan; his mother, Annette Foucault of Proctor; sisters, Virginia (John) Jones and Robin Beebe, both of Duluth; brother, Wayne (Michelle) Foucault of Culver; nieces and nephews, Zoe, Emma, Johnny, Darren, Austin, Bri and Maxi; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be today, Thursday, from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, Pastor Lynn Kern officiating.
Carmine Ned Priolo, Carmine Ned Priolo, who served with the Solway Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and was a member of St. Rose Parish in Proctor, passed away Wednesday March 25, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was 84.
He worked for Priolo and Sons Construction for many years, and retired from the Duluth Air Base as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He served as an Army Sergeant in World War II from 1943-45. He was decorated with two bronze stars, two purple hearts, and fought in the Pacific Theatre.
Carmine met his spouse Dorothy at the roller-skating rink; they were married June 18, 1949 and together they raised eight children in Duluth. They continued to roller-skate together for many, many years.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy; brother Theodore; two sisters, Catherine Slocum and Mary Sue Wisocki.
Carmine is survived by his children, Richard (Marie) Priolo of Minneapolis, Cheryl Nordby of Chicago, Ill., Mary Sue (Tim) Utt of Duluth, Steven (Nancy) Priolo of Saginaw, Minn., Nancy Priolo of Hanover Park, Ill., Robert (Elizabeth) Priolo of Duluth, Allen (Janet) Priolo of Duluth, James (Kathleen) Priolo of Twin Lakes, Wis.; 19 grandchildren, Gianna, David, Mark, Chad, Jeremy, Janelle, Christopher, Jayme, Stephanie, Steven, Brandon, Charissa, Nicholas, Thomas, Michelle, Ross, Jaclyn, Kristina, Brian; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Norlander, Rose Langlois both of Duluth; extended family and friends.
A funeral mass was held Saturday, March 28 in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Father William Fider officiating.
David Paul Semmelroth, Jr., David Paul Semmelroth, Jr., 28, died unexpectedly on March 29, 2009.
He was born in Duluth on Feb. 25, 198l to Dave and Debbie Mraz Semmelroth.
David was a 2000 graduate of Duluth East High School and attended the College of St. Scholastica. He worked as a salesman at Prime Appliance.
David was a member of the Gnesen Volunteer Fire Dept. and enjoyed wakeboarding, reading, writing, trapshooting and darts. He was baptized and raised at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Nancy Mraz; and his uncle, Richard Mraz.
David is survived by his parents, Dave Sr. and Debbie Semmelroth, Duluth; sister, Trudi Reed, St. Paul; niece, Tianna; nephews, Quentin and Al-amin; paternal grandparents, Max and Bev Semmelroth, Proctor; girlfriend, Sarah Raymond and her son, Parker; and many aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held today, Thursday in Bethany Baptist Church, 6700 Grand Ave., Duluth.
