Doris Mae Stromlund, Doris Mae Stromlund of Munger Shaw Road, who owned Busy Corner Grocery in the 1950’s and early 1960’s with her former husband Clifford Olafson in Proctor, died peacefully Mon. evening, Mar. 19, 2001 at home after a long battle with lung cancer. She was 74.
She was born in 1926 in East Lake, Minn. to Ted and Christine (Bystrom) Freeman. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1944. Doris obtained certification as a Lab Tech Ass’t from DAVTI in 1972. Until her retirement in 1978, she managed the Hickory Farms store at the Miller Hill Mall. She was over a 20-year member of the Solway Flamettes Ladies Auxiliary and a life member of the VFW Post 3044 Cotton Meadowlands. She served as a St. Louis County 4-H Leader and was a member of the Solway Township Comprehensive Land Use Committee. From 1996-99, she mentored students at Hermantown High School.
She is survived by her husband of 23 years Clare, two daughters, two sons, three brothers, a sister, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Chapel and will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. services Fri. in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West. Pastor David Mork officiating. Burial will be in Solway Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Solway Flamettes, Solway Town Hall, 4029 Munger Shaw Road, Cloquet, Minn. 55720.
Charles J. Marttila, Charles J. Marttila of Floodwood died Sat., Mar. 17, 2001 at the Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. He was 92.
He was born Jan. 19, 1909 in Floodwood to Alfred and Hanna (Somero) Marttila and was raised in the Floodwood area. He moved to Detroit, Mich. where he met and married Maire Lehtinen on June 29, 1935. They moved to Howell, Mich. where they owned and operated a chicken farm. He moved to Floodwood in 1949 and then moved to Proctor in 1955, where they owned and operated the Gambles Store and he also did carpentry work, retiring in 1967. In his younger years, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and also a 50-year member of the Cloquet Eagles Club. He and his wife were instrumental in organizing the Floodwood Senior Citizens Center. He had resided at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth for the past three years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Maire in 1995, nine brothers and sisters, and a stepbrother.
Survivors include a daughter Nancy (René) Zied of Green Valley, Ariz., sons Robert (Inge) of Negaunee, Mich., Ronald (Bernadine) of Saginaw, Minn. and Charles (Lisa) of Shoreview, Minn., two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Spring burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Floodwood, Minn.
Sharon Lyes, Sharon Lyes of Cloquet, who worked part-time for the Proctor Journal, died Fri., Mar. 16 in a Duluth hospital after a short battle with cancer. She was 51.
She was born Sept. 29, 1949 to John and Emily (Ojala) Hallback. Sharon was a 1967 graduate of Cloquet High School. She married Michael Lyes in 1970.
Sharon was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed shopping for antiques, looking for treasures at rummage sales and gardening and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband of 30 years Michael of Cloquet, daughters Tammi Forconi and Stacy Lyes, both of Cloquet, grandchildren Taylor and Kelsey Forconi, sisters Kathleen (Dennis) Johnson, Roberta (William) Johnson and Susan (Clifford) Jackson, all of Cloquet, brothers Donald (Shirley) Hallback, Charles Hallback and Terrance (Donna) Hallback, all of Cloquet, mother-in-law Bernice Persons of Cloquet, and many other relatives and friends.
Spring interment will be in Atkinson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
Margaret J. “Mardy” Pederson, Margaret J. “Mardy” Pederson of North Pike Lake Road died Sun., Mar. 18, 2001, in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 71.
She was born in Duluth to Joseph and Sophie (Sojka) Janczak. She was a lifelong Duluth and Pike Lake area resident. Mardy was a 1948 graduate of Denfeld High School and had been a homemaker. She had been an employee of Oliver Iron Mining Co. for nine years. She married Howard A. Pederson in Duluth and was a member of St. Josephat National Catholic Church.
Mardy was preceded in death by her parents, a brotherand a sister.
Survivors include her husband Howard, two daughters, two brothers and four sisters, including her twin Marcella (Arthur) Thompson of Esko, two grandchildren, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.
Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
