Winifred Irene “Winnie” Eklund, Winifred Irene “Winnie” Eklund, who was a community activist in Duluth and was named Woman of the Year in 1983, died Sat., Mar. 4, 2000 in her Village Drive home in Proctor. She was 84.
She was born in Cloquet. The family left Cloquet on the last train to Duluth during the Cloquet fire. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1935. She married Carl Eklund. She was a beautician for various businesses including setting hair at Bell Brothers Funeral Home until retiring in 1982.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She served as the district chairman with the March of Dimes. She was the first woman appointed to the Parks and Recreation board, a member of the first committee for Educational TV, which started WDSE/TV Channel 8 and a YMCA board member. She was general chairman of Women’s Institute and a member of its advisory board.
She was past president of the West Duluth Women’s Club, Merritt P.T.S.A., Duluth Council of P.T.S.A. and District P.T.S.A. She was a member of the state board P.T.S.A. serving in the P.T.S.A. for 22 years. She was general chairman of the Duluth Day Luncheon in 1974.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years Carl Eklund, daughters Donna (Bill) Ongalo of Angora and Kathleen (Don) Stanley of Proctor, a sister Katherine Sampson of Duluth, a brother Louis (Jan) Doucette of Duluth, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Adeline Louise Rice, Sharon Glen of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Adeline Louise Rice. She died Mon., Feb. 28, 2000 in Hibbing at the age of 91.
She was born in Chisholm and was a lifelong resident.
She married George Rice, Sr. in Chisholm and she was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chisholm.
Adeline is also survived by her son, another daughter, two sisters, a daughter-in-law, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many relatives and special friends.
Inurnment was in Chisholm Cemetery.
Marvin O. Brenna, Services were held earlier this week for Marvin O. Brenna. He died Fri., Mar. 3, 2000 in his Ugstad Rd. home. He was 81.
A resident of Proctor for 61 years, Mr. Brenna was born in Eden Township, Gully, Minn. He married Joyce Emberg in Proctor Sept. 8, 1948. He was employed as a machinist with the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 32 years, retiring in 1972. Following his retirement, he operated Brenna’s Home Repair for many years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He completed 25 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, the International Association of Machinists, Proctor American Legion, Proctor Area Historical Society, DM&IR Veterans Association, the Eighth Air Force Historical Society and the 96th Bomb Group.
He was preceded in death by his four brothers and a sister and his great-grandson Jack Swanson who died in January.
Survivors include his wife Joyce, daughters Kristine Lyons of Moose Lake and Kathy Wolffe of Knife River, a son David (Chris) Brenna of Proctor, sisters Inez (Andrew) Gordon of Klamath Falls, Ore., Gladys (Philip) Megordon of Palm Beach, Fla., and Vivian (Halvor) Rijke of Gully, Minn., grandchildren Chad (Becky) Brenna, Nicole (Matt) Swanson, Becky and Adam Wolffe, great-grandchildren Jessica Taylor, Ian Swanson and Cole Brenna.
Service was held Monday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proctor, the Rev. Mark Osthus officiating.
Interment was in Oneota Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
