CDR Edward James Stauber, USCG (Ret.), CDR Edward James Stauber, USCG (Ret.), of W. 8th St., where he lived for over 60 years, was called by God on Fri., Feb. 3, 2006, while visiting his daughter and her family in North Carolina. He was 87.
Ed was born in Duluth to Anthony Benjamin and Ellen (Landgren) Stauber, the eldest of 10 children. He grew up in Duluth Heights and attended grade and junior high school there. He was a 1937 graduate of Central High School. Ed was attending Duluth State Teachers College and serving as a Reservist in the U.S. Navy when he was called to active duty in 1940. He spent a great deal of the war in North Africa and for a time was Officer in Charge of the naval base in Oran, Algeria. Ed spent over 33 years serving his country. He met his wife Kathleen LeBlanc, while at Duluth State Teachers College, and they were married on Sept. 21, 1940 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Proctor. Ed and Katie celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family during 2005. He was employed by Scott Graff Lumber Company and Radford Company. During this time he was also a Coast Guard Reservist and rose to the rank of Commander prior to his retirement. Ed was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop No. 21. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin on Little Sandy Lake and going to the “hunting shack” with his brothers.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marguerite and brother Lawrence, as well as infant brothers Richard and Michael, grandsons Stevie and George, and great-granddaughter Kathleen.
Survivors include his wife Kathleen, daughters Edwardeen (John) Thompson of Kernersville, N.C., Donna Lee (George) Stratioti, Elizabeth (A. Ronald) Stauber-Johnson, Kathleen Mary (Jack) Johnson and Mary Jill (Michael) Busam, all of Duluth, son Richard Joseph of Duluth, brothers Anthony, Delano and Ronald, sisters Lorraine Kari and Betty Samec, 24 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. Ed was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We won’t say good-bye; instead, as he said to everyone, “So Short”, Dad.
Services were held last Friday in St. James Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Charles Flynn officiating. Burial at Oneota Cemetery with full military honors.
David F. Lee, David F. Lee of Proctor died Mon., Feb. 6, 2006, in his home following a battle with melanoma since Sept. 21, 2005. He was 74.
Dave was born in Duluth on Feb. 23, 1931, to Reuben and Amanda (Ellefson) Lee. He was employed by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 37 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Proctor Area Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Ruby and her son Paul.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughter Lynette (Bob) Specht; sons Brent (Ann) and Brian (Melissa “Mitz”) and their mother Marlys Lee, stepdaughter Kathy Holshouser, stepson Ken (Sharon) Peterson, 17 grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, a brother Francis (Elizabeth) Lee, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family wishes to thank the SMDC doctors, nurses, rehab and hospice staff; the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the staff at Cyberknife Radiation Treatment Center of St. Paul, and the staff at Trevilla of New Brighton.
A private committal service preceded a gathering of family and friends last week in the Proctor Moose Lodge Hall.
Dolores I. McGovern, Dolores I. McGovern of Duluth went to be with her Lord on Sat., Feb. 4, 2006. She was 86.
She was born to Walter Greshen Quick and Valerie (Kusnierek) Quick. Dolores graduated from Girl’s Cathedral High School in Duluth before working at the Woolworth’s on 3rd Avenue West. She was an elementary school teacher at St. Rose and St. James Parochial Schools, and taught religious education for St. Rose and Good Shepherd Parishes. Dolores was a former member of St. Michael’s and Good Shepherd Parishes in Duluth and St. Rose Parish in Proctor; and currently attended St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Duluth. Dolores was a proud fan of the Duluth Dukes baseball team since 1939, and held season tickets for the Duluth Huskies baseball team. She was also the Number One Fan of the Singing Slovene’s Polka Band, and attended most of their practices and trips.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Eugene, an infant brother Joseph, and her sisters Jean Quick and Eileen (formerly Beauleau) Willet.
She is survived by her daughter Madonna Marie McGovern of Alexandria, Va. and son Seann Eugene McGovern of Duluth, brother Walter “Buddy” Quick of Duluth, and sisters Lois Quick of Two Harbors and Joan Quick of Duluth.
A mass of Christian burial was held in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
